Alma Family Services Review
The East Los Angeles based Alma Family Services was established in 1975 to offer a multitude of community based services, like substance abuse and comprehensive behavioral health to families of special needs. To date, Alma operates eight outpatient behavioral health facilities throughout LA along with providing comprehensive care within families homes, schools, residential facilities and wherever they are needed most. There are also specialty youth intervention programs devoted to guiding young people in the right direction through socialization, outreach programs and community collaboration.
Treatment and Staff
The substance abuse services through Alma Family Services are designed for children, adolescents, adults and older adults who are dealing with a chemical dependency or an existing dual diagnosis. Alma offers as assessment and individualIzed treatment plan along with coordination with services offered through the city of Los Angeles. This can mean placing the client into a detox facility or residential program. Every strengths based treatment plan is put together in collaboration with the family, client and city programs, and is created based on the client’s treatment goals.
If there is no need for a detox or inpatient treatment to begin with there are outpatient programs offered at several locations throughout LA. These programs are based on a relapse prevention model using psychoeducation and evidence-based treatment approaches. There are individual and group therapy services for the client and their families, medication management if needed and case management for medical or dental services, or housing support. Clients develop a relapse prevention plan and learn about what their triggers are along with new coping skills. They also work on communication and family issues in addition to anger management. Clients learn how to identify their patterns that are associated with their addiction and begin to see different ways to steer their energies towards making healthy choices.
For at risk youth there are intervention programs that take place in school or at home. These programs focus on delinquent behaviors and offer recreational and social activities that promote educational and future goals. There are also parenting classes and counseling services offered as well.
These programs are not 12-step based, but the counselors do provide referrals and resources for those who wish to have extra support by providing meeting addresses within their neighborhoods.
There is an extremely large and dedicated staff at Alma Family Services. This include psychiatrists, LMFT, LCSW, substance abuse counselors, employment specialists and educators.
Extras
The aquatic center is available to special needs families. There are classes for both individuals and families.

The wrap around programming is beneficial to clients of all ages and offers a solid foundation for continued success down the line. It’s a solid resource for the families of east Los Angeles.
