All Star Recovery Sober Living Review
All Star Recovery opened its first sober living home in Santa Barbara, California in 2006, offering space to up to 15 men seeking a new start and clean living. A second home—also for men—recently opened in Ventura with room for about 24 residents. Both locations are close to beautiful Southern California beaches with accessibility to a myriad of activities such as golf, fishing, surfing, hiking, bicycling and tennis courts in addition to bus lines and prospective employment opportunities. All residents are expected to behave responsibly and contribute to the running of the houses in which they live.
Accommodations and Amenities
Each house has six bedrooms that can accommodate two or three men and four full bathrooms. Rooms are simple but spacious, with a single bed and dresser for each resident. Each is equipped with cable and WiFi is available if residents bring their own laptops. There’s a TV and DVD player in each house and movies are available for watching when residents aren’t working or at 12-step meetings. The houses have laundry rooms in addition to meeting rooms for house meetings and on-site AA meetings. A manager is on the premises 24/7.
Each All Star house has a fully-equipped kitchen where residents prepare their own meals. In the spacious backyard areas, gas barbecues are provided at both locations.
Rules and Regulations
A man who signs on to All Star Recovery must be 100% clean of all substances, including maintenance medications like Methadone and Suboxone. Random on-site urinalysis tests for drug use and Breathalyzer tests for alcohol are administered. Upon admission, residents take an active role in cooking, kitchen clean-up and the cleaning, care and maintenance of the house. They’re expected to maintain neat and clean bedrooms and participate in the cleaning of bathrooms and other areas of their house.
Each new resident undergoes a 30-day probationary period, during which time the curfew is 9:30 pm. Once this has been successfully completed, residents are permitted to stay out until 11 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Attendance is required at three on-site 12-step meetings plus a minimum of three off-site meetings each week. Residents are also expected to attend and participate house meetings twice a week.
Extras
Though the men spend much of their free time at 12-step meetings, they are also encouraged to participate in fun sober activities that are accessible around the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas. With locations near sandy Southern California beaches and seaside communities, these houses are are especially conducive to leisure and recreation.
In Summary
All Star Recovery is firmly based in the 12 steps and wholeheartedly supports residents’ participation in the local recovery community. However, with a strict policy against all drugs, including medication-assisted treatment, this sober living facility is most definitely not the right choice for those on Methodone or Suboxone. That said, the beautiful locations and proximity to beaches—and thus a variety of recreational activities—make All Star a five-star choice for fun and healthy SoCal living.
