Alameda Family Services Review
Since its beginning back in 1970 as a hotline for teens experiencing crisis, Alameda Family Services has since grown into a fully functioning behavioral health facility. Located in Northern California in Alameda, a city adjacent to Oakland, it offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adolescents and adults. This non-profit agency is dedicated to helping clients with low or no income and their families by offering group and individual therapy.
Treatment and Staff
The adult substance abuse treatment programs begin with clients receiving an assessment either over the phone or in person. After the initial meeting, each person is assigned to a counselor to develop an individualized treatment plan. Generally, the programs involve attending a group therapy session once a week in the evening for about an hour and a half. AFS keeps its groups small so that everyone has the opportunity to share. There are also individual therapy sessions for those who need the extra support, particularly if there is a concern for relapse. Individual sessions can also be used as periodic check-ins if the client has been in the program for a while and their progression seems steady.
The youth outpatient treatment is for clients ages 12 to 18 and the program is offered on a referral basis only, meaning that either the juvenile justice system, parent or the guardian must take the initial steps to get the individual treatment. The youth program lasts between eight and 18 weeks, with clients participating in group and individual therapy twice a week for about an hour per session.
Therapy methods are based on behavior modification and CBT. Counselors may also use evidence-based methods like EMDR, art and music therapy or mindfulness techniques with clients, depending on what appears to be the most effective treatment modality. Though the facility does not base treatment on the 12 steps, if it appears client would benefit from that approach, they can refer clients to meeting locations. Additionally, clients may also receive weekly urinalysis in order to track their progress. The group and individual sessions are led by trained CSACs as well as LCSWs and LPCs.
Extras
Family and couples counseling services are offered on an individualized basis. Programs are available in Spanish and Cantonese in addition to English. The facility offers intervention and school-based community outreach programs, as well as resources for homeless adolescents.
