Situated minutes away from the beach and the Los Angeles International Airport in the secluded neighborhood of Westchester, Airport Marina Counseling Services (AMCS) is a non-profit community-based treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with mental illness, trauma and abuse. Founded in 1961, AMCS provides comprehensive outpatient treatment for clients of all ages as well as couples and families. The vast majority of AMCS’s clients are uninsured and have little access to mental health services. To this end, the facility offers treatment on a sliding fee scale.
Treatment and Staff
AMCS offers a vast array of treatment services for clients dealing with issues including trauma, domestic violence and child abuse, depression, anxiety and stressful life events such as parenting problems or the loss of a loved one. Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an assessment to help staff determine the most effective care plan. Treatment length varies depending on the specific needs of the individual, couple or family, with many clients participating in ongoing therapy indefinitely.
The facility provides individual and group therapy, family and couples counseling as well as child and adolescent therapy. The comprehensive approach combines solution-oriented psychotherapy with evidence-based methods like CBT and holistic methods like art therapy and mindfulness. In addition, AMCS provides psychiatric services including evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, consultations and referrals.
Specialized group therapy sessions are also available with topics including anger management, life and coping skills, education for parenting and medications. In addition, targeted groups are created based on requests by the community. Some of these include adolescent-specific anger management, couples therapy, gender-specific issues as well as groups with a focus on bereavement.
The AMCS team is comprised of psychologists, psychiatrists and Master’s-level therapists. One of the main goals at AMCS is to train pre-licensed therapists. To this end, there are many volunteers and interns from various educational institutions. For clients with co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis support is available. Since AMCS offers primarily outpatient-based psychotherapy sessions 12-step recovery is not typically a part of the programming.
The facility also provides counseling services off-site at area schools. Topics include risky behavior, abuse and family stress.
Airport Marina Counseling Services is a nonprofit treatment facility that provides counseling, medication management, crisis interventions and specialized group sessions. A community-based facility, AMCS offers affordable outpatient mental health care to clients without access to necessary treatment. For clients seeking a reputable facility, quality treatment services and a compassionate staff, AMCS is a great resource.
