Covington Behavioral Health IOP Review
Just outside New Orleans, Covington, Louisiana’s Covington Behavioral Health is a part of the Acadia Healthcare network. This treatment facility caters to adults experiencing a mental health crisis. This facility has both inpatient and outpatient services, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The latter entails group therapy, psychoeducation and dual diagnosis support. Treatment at Covington includes 12-step intervention for clients with substance abuse disorders, and utilizes evidence-based protocols.
Treatment and Staff
Clients interested in the IOP can either call the facility or walk in for an assessment prior to admittance. The IOP is also a step-down option to the inpatient program at the same location. In some cases, participants come via referrals from outside agencies, doctors and community resources.
The IOP is flexible and runs in either the morning or evening. This track runs three hours per day and mainly consists of group therapy. The IOP requires a minimum of six hours per week in a group setting, and an hour long individual therapy session that they schedule to accommodate clients’ personal lives. The substance abuse IOP lasts for about eight weeks, and runs from 9 am to 1 pm three times per week. Clients struggling with behavioral health issues as their primary diagnosis typically remain in the program for up to 10 weeks.
Treatment zeros in on identifying triggers, developing new coping skills, and relapse prevention using abstinence-based interventions. While this program is mainly group therapy based, individual therapy sessions can occurr on an as-needed basis.
Common therapeutic approaches during treatment include DBT, CBT and Solution Focused Interventions. Depending on each client’s personal treatment plan, the approaches vary.
LCSWs and LPC lead all therapy sessions in the IOP. There are also on-site psychiatrists who provide medication management services.

Finally, similar to individual therapy, family and couples counseling are available for those who request it.

The IOP at Covington is a hands on program that is the least intensive level of care offered at the hospital. It works as either a step down or initial treatment program for those with a primary diagnosis of mental illness. Above all, the goal with this program is to help clients build life and coping skills that they can utilize after they have completed treatment and are ready to return to their communities and the workforce.
