Bergen County New JerseyThe Basics

New Pathway Counseling Services offers outpatient services for adults and adolescents suffering with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. Since 1991, New Pathway has served residents in Hudson, Morris and Bergen counties in New Jersey. With outpatient services available in Pinebrook, Paramus and Bayonne, treatment is comprehensive with extended hours.

New Pathway was founded by Dr. Frank Mattiace, a former NFL player with a masters in counseling and doctorate in philosophy and psychology. Mattiace developed the Soarfit program, which is the foundation of treatment at New Pathway. This holistic approach to treatment combines evidence-based modalities alongside a rigorous exercise program that combines group classes, individual training, meditation and martial arts.

Treatment and Staff

A therapist must evaluate clients prior to being placed into one of New Pathway’s three tracks of treatment: the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard outpatient. Adolescents under the age of 16 must have parental consent for treatment.

Day treatment is available only at the Paramus location. Duration of the PHP is 16 weeks with clients meeting Monday through Friday from 9 am to 2 pm for group therapy and educational sessions. Therapy utilizes DBT and CBT and topics include peer group discussion, addiction and health, family dynamics, peer pressure, coping skills, relapse prevention and guided mediation. Clients with co- occurring disorders must see an LPC for individual therapy. Urinalysis testing is once per week and attendance of a minimum of three 12-step meetings per week are required.

The IOP is eight weeks in duration with groups three times per week, totaling nine hours. Topics are similar to those in PHP with less frequency. Standard outpatient clients meet once a week for 12 weeks. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed. While attendance at 12-step meetings is not mandatory for this track, participation is encouraged. All groups are facilitated by an LADC.

The adolescent group meets twice per week from 4 to 6 pm for a total of 24 weeks. Groups use CBT and focus on identifying triggers, family dynamics, peer pressure, healthy hobbies and garnering outside support. Family groups are offered and, while not mandatory, they are strongly encouraged.

Each time a client attends group therapy he or she also participates in the group exercise program as well which incorporates cardio, weights, yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

Extras

New Pathway also offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in Jersey City and Suboxone treatment for those detoxing from opiates.

In Summary

New Pathway Counseling Services offers comprehensive outpatient services for adults and adolescents struggling with drugs, alcohol and co-occurring disorders. The cornerstone of treatment at New Pathway Counseling Services is its unique Soarfit Program—a holistic approach that combines cardio, weights, sports and martial arts alongside evidence-based therapeutic treatments. New Pathway believes that recovery can be facilitated by clients developing a closer relationship with their bodies as well as their minds.
