12 Step Sober Living12 Step Sober Living Review

Founded in 2004 in Sunland, California by Joel and Lisa Moss, who both sport long-term recovery, 12 Step Sober Living provides a safe and structured environment for newly clean and sober men over 18. The Moss family established a sober living home so that they could help recovering alcoholics and addicts, the way they were once helped.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Sunland house is a single-family residence situated on a quiet residential neighborhood, in close proximity to a gamut of 12-step meetings, local businesses and a Ralph’s supermarket. 12-Step Sober Living accommodates between seven and 12 clients, who are housed in double-occupancy or quadruple-occupancy furnished rooms. Joel and Lisa Moss live on the property and oversee all operations. There are also two pooches on the premises. Amenities include Cable TV, Wi-Fi, towels, linen, bedding, washer, dryer, laundry soap, paper products, and other basic supplies. Clients who want to tote along a personal blanket are encouraged to do so.

The house is stocked with food, including milk, eggs, bologna, coffee and creamer. Additionally, Joel Moss gets food donations from Pizza Hut, Noah’s Bagels and coffee from Starbucks. Clients are responsible for the purchase of other groceries and for meal preparation, which is done in a fully equipped kitchen.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and must have already undergone detox prior to admission. As their name suggests, 12-Step Sober Living is deeply rooted in the 12 steps. Weekly requirements include attending four AA/NA meetings, participating in household chores, maintaining a productive, healthy lifestyle and being at house meetings. 12-Step Sober Living also offers two on-site AA meetings at 6 pm Thursdays and Sundays.

During the first 30 days, the curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. After that period, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. The house practices a zero tolerance policy, and those that test positive are evicted immediately off the premises. While Moss offers extensive vocational guidance and support, clients are held accountable for their rent and other personal necessities. Clients who seek outpatient treatment are provided with referrals.

Extras

12-Step Sober Living is a member of the Sober Living Network, Sober Living Coalition.

Lisa Moss operates a recovery information phone line, which has over 200 recordings, including 12-Step speakers, meditations, Big Book excerpts and readings from motivational authors. Additionally, there is a listing of phone meetings. The recovery line is open to recovering alcoholics and addicts, who need to share or just listen to someone who can give them a ray of hope. The phone numbers are listed on 12-Step Sober Living’s website.

In Summary

Lisa and Joel Moss are passionate about recovery and the 12-steps. They care about the well being of their clients, who develop a family-like bond with one another. For men who want to work on their steps in a nurturing yet productive environment, 12-Step Sober Living is the perfect place.
