Tara Treatment Center Review
Nestled on 13 acres south of Indianapolis, Tara Treatment Center is a haven for those struggling to overcome addiction to alcohol and drugs. Founded in 1985 by Ann Daugherty, who lost her brother to alcoholism, this facility has maintained a family atmosphere. With a holistic approach to treatment, Tara incorporates therapeutic processing and education for the individual and the family. This unique blend helps the individual change established thinking and behavioral patterns to support long-term abstinence.
Accommodations and Food
In contrast to the typical hospital setting, Tara Treatment Center consists of two separate houses for men and women. Depending on the census, there are two to three people in each room, with a total of four bathrooms in each residence. Up to 30 residents are provided with three balanced meals per day in their respective dining rooms. Meal times are considered part of the social program and clients are encouraged to eat together, make friends and support each other.
To further encourage client interaction, outside stimulation is limited to house phone calls, 12-step literature, spiritual tomes and a few hours of television.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who need it begin the program with a medically supervised detox. In order to provide a safe and effective detoxification, American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria is used.
The treatment program at Tara is holistic in nature, using several approaches to help individuals learn the concepts of recovery: experiential therapy, DBT, yoga and psychoeducation among them. Implementing various teaching strategies, counselors educate individuals on anger management and relapse prevention skills.
Days begin at 7:30 am with morning mediation, followed by group and individual therapy. After lunch together, residents gather for afternoon group and addiction education classes. Dinner is followed by free time. Evening 12-step or alumni meetings conclude the daily regimen with lights out at 11 pm.
The treatment at Tara is delivered by a team of professionals including nurses, physicians, psychologists and addiction counselors who see up to five clients in a rotation. This multi-disciplinary team allows Tara to meet the specific needs of each individual.
Visitation is every Saturday afternoon. All visitors are required to attend a family education program prior to visiting with their loved one.
Extras
Equine therapy and yoga based in the spiritual practices of the 12-step program are both offered at Tara Treatment Center.
