St. Helena Recovery Center Review
Nestled in the heart of California’s Napa Valley, just north of San Francisco in the small city of St. Helena, St. Helena Recovery Center has been offering detox and drug and alcohol inpatient treatment for 40 years. Each client at St. Helena’s receives an evidence-based treatment plan customized to their individual needs by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals. The facility, which strives to give residents a deeper understanding of addiction and its causes in concert with this plan, is affiliated with St. Helena Hospital and located on the same campus.
Accommodations and Food
In the 40-bed facility, clients share double-room occupancy (single beds only). Each room has its own bathroom, two closets and a private balcony with a view of either St. Helena’s inner garden or the rolling hills of Napa Valley.
Upon admission, clients relinquish their cell phones for the first 10 days of treatment. After that, calls are permitted in their individual rooms, though not in the lecture room, kitchen, hallways or common room where they typically gather to relax during breaks. The common room also has two computers, board games and a TV, which can be watched when the space isn’t being used for other purposes such as group meetings.
Meals at St. Helena’s are served cafeteria-style and prepared by a chef with an emphasis on giving residents variety on their daily menus. Sugar and caffeine are not allowed.
Treatment and Staff
St. Helena offers a 28-day treatment program that includes medically supervised detox, which may include Suboxone. Residents participate in a 12-step program, individual and group therapy, educational lectures and art therapy. With the help of a case manager, clients decides how many individual therapy sessions are needed each week. Group meetings—which are both co-ed and single sex—are held daily. Dual diagnosis support is not offered.
The staff at St. Helena’s includes board-certified counselors, physicians, clinicians, a nutritionist, chaplain and a nursing staff which is available on-site around the clock.
Extras
When clients complete treatment they have the option of aftercare, which is included in the overall cost. St. Helena alumni are encouraged to attend these support programs, led by qualified addiction counselors. Three such groups are held in the surrounding communities of Berkeley, Napa and Santa Rosa.
At St. Helena, family members are permitted to visit once a week on Saturdays from 3:30 to 6 pm. They’re also encouraged to participate in the family program, which is held from 11 am to 3:30 pm Saturdays for six weeks and covers a range of relevant issues such as the dynamics of addiction and how they can support and help a loved one in recovery. Joint lectures for clients and family are held from 11 am to 12:30 pm on those days, followed by separate family and resident groups from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.
Daily morning walks around the campus, stretching exercises in the hospital’s gym, yoga and massages (for an additional fee) as well as supervised hikes and visits to the facility spa are also available.

St. Helena Recovery Center provides medical detox and evidence-based treatment amid the lush, beautiful landscape of Napa Valley. While there’s no dual diagnosis support and aren’t a lot of bells and whistles, St. Helena would appeal to those interested in individualized treatment in a stunning Northern California location.
