The Basics
Founded in 1986, Realization Center Inc. is an outpatient treatment organization with two locations in NYC—Brooklyn and Manhattan. Marilyn J. White, a licensed substance abuse counselor, is the founder and Executive Director. The mission of the Realization Center is to inspire its clients to heal through individual and group therapy, by treating the whole person, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The Realization Center offers specialized therapy groups at the Brooklyn location and 12-step meetings at both the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses. With the help of a certified counselor, clients with co-occurring disorders will find a variety of specialized groups to meet their treatment needs.
Treatment and Staff
The Realization Center welcomes men, women and adolescents who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction as well as mental health issues like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is no detox available, though Buprenorphine and Suboxone treatments are administered for opioid addiction. Each client develops an individualized treatment plan with the help of clinical staff.
Clients meet for group therapy three to five times a week and individual sessions are scheduled once a week. All specialized groups are held at the Brooklyn campus; 90 groups are offered throughout the week. Clients with specialized needs—those in the LGBT community, veterans, DUI/DWI offenders, food addicts, chronic relapsers, Orthodox Jewish and Latino persons will find their niche in group therapy with individuals of the same demographic. Therapy using CBT, DBT and spiritual counseling are co-mingled with 12-step fundamentals and educational programs.
The adolescent program serves clients ages 13-17. Treatment involves education about recovery and addiction, parent participation and family group therapy to help clients find a healthy way to separate from their families and actualize their identities. The young adult program serves clients ages 18-25. Staff provides education on addiction and recovery to clients and their families, relapse prevention practices as well as random drug testing.
The clinical staff at both locations includes over 40 LCSWs, CADCs, Master’s-level mental health counselors and social workers.
Extras
The program for veterans addresses issues of PTSD and chemical dependence, using motivational enhancement therapy. The Center accommodates Orthodox Jewish clients with treatment that addresses the emotional issues and specific values of the Judaic tradition, in relation to addictive behaviors. Clients who are DUI/DWI offenders are directed to complete a 15-week intensive course to educate and support them in recovery.
