Four County Mental Health Center Review
Four County Mental Health Center offers substance abuse services on an outpatient basis to residents of Montgomery, Wilson, Elk, Cowley and Chautauqua counties, in southeastern Kansas. Since 1964, it has been assisting adults and adolescents with addiction and co-occurring disorders in the beautiful Elk City Lake area around the small town of Independence.
Treatment and Staff
At each of Four County Mental Health Center’s eight facilities, a substance abuse counselor conducts the initial assessment and, if detox or residential treatment is required, the client is provided with a referral. A medical doctor and a psychiatrist must assess those with co-occurring disorders in order to assign them to the proper regimen of treatment. In addition to groups, dual diagnosis clients are required to attend individual therapy once a week.
The substance abuse program has two options for treatment: regular outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP), which is not available to clients under 18 years of age. While the treatment plan is individually designed by the counselor and the client, the typical length of regular outpatient is 14 weeks. Individuals in this track meet once a week for a 90-minute group session facilitated by a counselor. Individual therapy may be a component but, again, that depends on the individual. The IOP program lasts up to 20 weeks and groups meet three times a week for three hours. Individual therapy with a Master’s-level therapist is once a week for an hour.
In both outpatient and IOP, the treatment team employs CBT and DBT depending on the group and the needs of the clients. Group topics include addiction studies, process group, family dynamics, coping skills, relapse prevention and goals group. Four County Mental Health Center supports the gathering of outside support while in the program, including 12-step meetings. Both tracks have a morning and evening option. For adolescents in outpatient, a parent group meets while the client is in session.
On average, there are three Master’s-level therapists and four licensed substance abuse counselors at each location. While the number of professional staff members varies at each location, there is always a psychiatrist, a medical doctor and two registered nurses.
Extras
The substance abuse program at Four County Mental Health Center subscribes to the philosophy that alcoholism/addiction is a family disease and addresses the co-dependency of family members and significant others as an integral part of treatment. Family group meets twice a month without the client in attendance. There are a maximum of 30 people in this group, which is led by a counselor; the goal is to identify with other families struggling with an addict and find peer support.
In Summary
Not all programs recognize the damage addiction causes to family and loved ones so the fact that Four County Mental Health Center takes this into consideration is a positive aspect of this program. Other pluses are the dual diagnosis support, adolescent-specific programming and the staff’s high level of education, which can be unusual for outpatient treatment.
