ASSETS Program Review

The ASSETS Program is is a small and personal outpatient treatment facility by Community Outreach Inc., a not-for-profit multi-service organization based in Corvallis, Oregon. The program focuses on low-income adult men and women, ages 18 and over, suffering from substance abuse. To make treatment accessible for everyone, all services are offered on a sliding fee scale.

Treatment and Staff

The ASSETS program begins with an initial assessment to determine the client’s needs and get a clear picture of their physical, mental and emotional health. After that, the staff decides what level of care will be the most useful. There are two treatment options—outpatient level, which includes just one three-hour group meeting per week, and intensive outpatient (IOP), which includes four groups plus an individual therapy session at least once a week. Treatment combines traditional talk therapy and the 12 steps; counselors recommend clients attend AA/NA meetings regularly to build a supportive recovery foundation. The recommended commitment to treatment is at least three months, though it is up to the clients themselves to decide what fits their needs best.

Group meetings take place in the afternoon Monday though Friday, with an evening relapse prevention class on Wednesdays. Groups cover a wide range of topics—from grief and loss to meditation and mindfulness. Therapy methods include CBTmotivational interviewing and EMDR. One-on-one sessions may delve into other methods, like expressive therapy, depending on what the client needs. There is also treatment and care for those with co-occurring disorders.

The average number of clients in a group session can vary between three and nine. If the group exceeds 12, it splits in half. There is one counselor to a group, and meetings are typically a mix of men and women. ASSETS does offer gender-specific groups for particular topics like childhood trauma, domestic violence and parenting. Meeting times vary a bit, but are generally between the hours of 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm, with breaks in between.

The staff at ASSETS is very small, with two counselors running group and individual sessions and one counselor heading up the aftercare program. Everyone on staff is a certified and licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC).

Extras

ASSETS offers a lifetime aftercare program that meets one evening a week, upon successful completion of the initial program. Through Community Outreach, clients can access other services including   smoking cessation classes, temporary housing, parenting classes, domestic violence counseling and programs to assist with finding permanent housing. In addition, regular urinalysis tests are performed randomly.

In Summary

The ASSETS Programs offers an affordable, personal experience for those seeking treatment. The small staff is committed to working with people from all walks of life and provides truly individual support in a judgment-free environment. With a passion for helping others, the ASSETS Program is a safe place to build a foundation for a life in recovery.
