Advent Group MinistriesAdvent Group Ministries Review

Advent Group Ministries is a non-profit, social service agency providing both residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment for adolescents, in addition to counseling for all ages. Located in San Jose, California, this Christian organization has been around since 1985. By using sliding scale fees and offering free outpatient programs for Santa Clara County residents, treatment becomes accessible for all. Through the 12 steps, group and individual counseling and spirituality, clients can find a new way of life.

Accommodations and Food

The residential program for adolescents houses clients by gender, offering two homes for six boys each and one home for six girls. The group homes are all similar, featuring shared bedrooms with twin-sized beds. A kitchen, dining room and living room with a TV can be found downstairs. For exercise, residents are taken to local parks, in addition to other recreational outings on the weekends. Smoking is not permitted.

Three meals a day are provided and feature a variety of choices, ranging from fresh fruit to sautéed chicken to pasta. Special dietary requests can usually be accommodated. Snacks are provided in the afternoon.

Treatment and Staff

The long-term residential program treats adolescents ages 13 to 18 for nine to 12 months. Detox is not available. Treatment combines evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT with group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, drug and alcohol education and 12-step meetings. Recreational activities and equine therapy are also offered.

With 24-hour care and supervision, clients are carefully monitored. Individual therapy with a primary therapist occurs several times a week, while group therapy happens for several hours each day. Group topics include self-esteem, introduction to the 12 steps, relapse prevention, trauma, communication, processing and anger management. This program costs $8,700 per month.

The outpatient program for adolescents, ages 13 to 20, is free for all Santa Clara residents. This option meets five times a week, for an hour and a half. The focus is on group therapy, discussing topics such as relapse prevention, self-esteem, coping skills, introduction to the 12 steps and trauma. The length of this program depends on the individual’s needs.

In addition to therapy, all of the substance abuse programs make the 12 steps a part of the rehabilitation process. Residential clients attend a couple of off-site AA/NA meetings per week, getting a chance to participate in a recovery-based community. Those who participate in the outpatient program are encouraged to attend meetings on their own time. Spirituality is found through this program, as well as optional church services on Sundays for the residential clients.

The staff includes certified therapists and addiction counselors.

Extras

Advent Group Ministries offers a variety of services to the community. These include counseling for all ages, a strengthening families program,  and a housing program called “The Nest” for young, at-risk women.

The Refuge program provides housing for court-mandated women and their children. During their stay, the women can connect with their children in healthy ways and participate in a job, counseling, drug tests and parenting classes. Clients are not charged to stay in the home and put 30 percent of their income toward a savings account that can be used after discharge.

The Nest houses middle- and high school-aged girls who have been involved in sex trafficking. The six-client home provides a safe haven of counseling, academic and life skills education and recreational activities, enabling the girls to work though traumas and gain independence.

The strengthening families program is a twice-monthly parent, youth and family skills-building course, taught in a group setting. This free program is for clients ages 6 to 11 and 12 to 17, with each group attending separate sessions. A complimentary meal, discussions, role-playing and learning games are included.

In addition to receiving outpatient therapy, people of all ages can come to the facility for individual therapy. These sessions are an hour in length, are run by a therapist and are based on a sliding scale fee.

In Summary

Advent Group Ministries provides affordable, comprehensive treatment for substance abuse at all levels. While most of its programs are geared toward adolescents, adults can find help through individual counseling. By offering sliding scale fees and several free services, this program becomes available to all those who need help.
