Miramar Review
Miramar was founded by Derik Bryan, who also owns the Eating Disorder Center of Newport Beach, and has a number of treatment modalities available and offers personalized programs that put an emphasis on Christianity and Spirituality. The intimacy of this 18-bed facility allows for a lot of individual attention to the clients, flexibility of treatment methods and a progressive array of options to choose from.
Accommodations and Food
Miramar comprises three different residential buildings, each maxing out at six clients. Men and women stay in separate residences and attend separate therapy groups. The two houses near the central facility are stylistic and have a koi pond and courtyard, while a nearby seaside bungalow boasts a gazebo and gardens. The residences are similarly outfitted: not too fancy, but charming and comfortable. Most rooms are shared, but private rooms are available, and each pair of roommates does get a separate bathroom. Two gourmet chefs whip up tailor-made meals to be served at the houses.
Treatment and Staff
Miramar’s approach is generally holistic treatment. The high staff-to-client ratio makes for plenty of personal attention, so treatment can be fitted to each resident’s situation, including co-occurring disorders. Medically supervised detox is available, and three independent MDs tend to clients’ physical and pharmaceutical needs. Each week clients receive three to four individual therapy sessions with masters and PhD level therapists to target the underlying issues that lead to addiction. Weekly family therapy is held in person when possible, and by phone conference when distance intervenes. Two acupuncture sessions and one massage are included in each week of treatment, as well as art therapy and pet therapy.
Extras
Daily routines include yoga or gym workouts and morning meditation, and the seaside location provides opportunities for beach walks, hiking and biking as well. Twice a week, staff members take residents on go-kart outings and other activities designed to make sober living fun.
In Summary
Although Miramar bills itself as a non-12-step rehab, variety and options are the name of the game at this Laguna Beach-based rehab—offering interested parties a few different opportunities to establish a relationship with a higher power through a requested Spiritual Emphasis or Christian Emphasis for their treatment program. Overall, the facility cares about their clients and wants them to have the best experience possible as well as continued success moving forward in their new, sober life.
