Spring Hill Recovery CenterSunspire Health: Spring Hill Review

Resting on 70 acres of land, Spring Hill in Ashby, Massachusetts is an intimate and peaceful treatment facility ideal for those who love the New England woodlands. An hour and 15 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Boston, Ashby is a quiet town with a population of only 3,074, and historic sites dating back to the 17th century. Founded in 2012 by Jack Maroney, the residential facility has since joined the expansive Sunspire Health network but maintains its quaint charm, emphasis on holistic treatment and accessibility to highly qualified and experienced staff members.

Accommodations and Food

Spring Hill can accommodate up to 35 clients and embraces a cozy, cabin-like feel. Most residents stay in wood-paneled, single-occupancy rooms; complete with a plush bed, full bath and stunning views of the surrounding foliage and mountains. If space is limited, some may temporarily stay in double occupancy rooms but the price is the same for both options.

Amenities include an entertainment room with a TV, a computer, books, a ping-pong table, a gym with cardio machines and weights, an exercise activity room that overlooks the mountains and a small common area with plush couches.

The dining room also looks out to the mountains and sits adjacent to a fireplace and comfy red couches. Meals are generally composed of warm comfort food. Breakfast is generally eggs, pancakes or French toast with fruit, yogurt and granola. Lunch includes choices such as hearty stews, healthy sandwiches and wraps, burgers or salads, and dinner is a bit heavier, with options like fish, chicken or beef with vegetables, salads, potatoes or rice. While all the food is tasty enough, it is not gourmet fare; still, accommodations can be made for food allergies.

Treatment and Staff

Spring Hill treats addiction and dual diagnosis with individual, group and family therapy, as well as 12-step meetings. Detox is not offered so residents will need to plan a physical and mental health screening on their own before being admitted for treatment. Despite Spring Hill being mostly in-line with the 12-step principles, attending AA and NA meetings aren’t mandatory. Still, meetings are held on-site for those who want to participate and Spring Hill will escort residents to outside groups several times a week as well.

A typical day begins with breakfast at 7:45 am, followed by a morning meditation with yoga or mindfulness. After which, clients attend group therapy or individual sessions with possible CBT integration (twice a week).  Experiential therapies, gender-specific group work, psycho-education, anger management, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and self-help sessions commence until lunch. Spiritual or religious support groups are also available. Lights out is at 11 pm.

Sundays are set aside for family therapy, which may be conducted in person or via phone or video conferencing. However, aside from family therapy, outside interaction is limited. In fact, social visits with family aren’t allowed at all and personal cell phones, laptops and other electronic communication devices are also not permitted. Residents may use the administrative office’s phone to call family in between sessions or in the evenings and can receive packages and mail if approved by a therapist.

The staff is available around the clock and includes a clinical director, a wellness director, a clinical consultant, a dual diagnosis specialist, a massage therapist, a RN and three recovery technicians. There is also a therapy dog, a golden retriever named Ollie, who once won a National Frisbee Competition and has a PhD in unconditional love. The staff-to-resident ratio is usually about three-to-one.

Extras

Potential activities include Tai-Chi, Qi Gong, Zumba, kickboxing, nature walks, organized sports and strength conditioning in the gym. Equine therapy is also available.

In Summary

Sunspire Health’s Spring Hill boasts a professional staff and a beautiful locale in addition to it’s evidence-based and holistic program. For anyone looking for quality and diverse treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders with the serene backdrop of western Massachusetts, Spring Hill is certainly worth consideration.
