Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders Review

Based out of Sydney, Australia the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders (CEDD) is a broad behavioral health organization that combats eating disorders and related issues on a number of levels. As a collaborative effort between the University of Sydney and the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), CEDD focuses on developing research and affecting public policy related to the treatment of eating disorders. Although it works extensively with affiliated facilities treating these issues, CEDD also offers some flexible outpatient-based treatment services of its own.

Treatment and Staff

In order to receive treatment at CEDD, clients can call in and work with practitioners and staff members to receive basic counseling and guidance. Because it is a non-intensive outpatient option, those in need of detox or stabilization services may need to seek additional help elsewhere. For the most part, CEDD’s actual one-on-one services for those struggling with eating disorders are limited to telepsychiatry sessions providing psychological and dietary advice and some basic counseling for families and individuals affected, in part through the affiliated Butterfly Foundation. The latter provides outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in a variety of different iterations, all with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT.

The staff at CEDD is wide-ranging and includes psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, Master’s-level counselors and additional research and clinical staff.

Extras

As mentioned, CEDD is most notable for its influence and effects on other healthcare providers and regulatory bodies. The organization offers structural guidance for other organizations looking to establish eating disorder treatment programs of all kinds. Staff members are also able to grant referrals and care suggestions to anyone who calls in seeking guidance. Other services include seminars, workshops and conferences held by CEDD on important issues related to eating disorders and related issues.

In Summary

Overall, the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders may be something of a misnomer for those seeking extensive, on-site treatment services. Instead, CEDD provides flexible outpatient counseling services with extensive abilities to refer participants to other supportive programs and services. Treatment is evidence-based and draws upon the latest in medical research. While it may not be a perfect fit for those seeking intensive care, the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders remains a strong resource and a local influencer when it comes to the treatment of eating disorders.
