Devereux Arizona Review
Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health of Scottsdale and Tucson, Arizona, is a youth empowerment residential program for those who are suffering from addiction and mental health disorders, or have experienced trauma. Helen Devereux originally founded this agency in 1912 as one of the pioneers in the behavioral health field, and since then the foundation has expanded on a national level to provide individual and their families comprehensive, evidence-based treatment offered by nurturing professionals.
Accommodations and Food
The Scottsdale residential facility is located on a sprawling 10 acres that includes the residential treatment facility as well as the therapeutic school, and can accommodate up to 48 kids, ages five to 17. The Tucson location is a bit smaller, with only 10 beds, but also has an educational complex on campus, also serving youth up to 17.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment programs are all individualized for each client’s specific needs and are strengths based. On a daily basis clients receive therapy along with a focus on academics. Both schools are accredited to teach K through 12 for kids who need extra support when it comes to behavioral and emotional challenges.
The substance abuse treatment program includes four group sessions per week on top of a regular schedule of school and treatment, and requires daily attendance of both on and off site 12 step meetings and relapse prevention classes. This program uses DBT as it’s main treatment approach through skills training.
Clients regularly attend groups that address anger issues, communication and social skills. There are medical and psychiatric services offered on campus that can include medication management. Clients also receive conflict resolution training, and learn about self care and respect, and social responsibility.
Both the teachers and therapists are all Master-level clinicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and LCSW.
Extras
Recreational therapy is an essential element to these programs. Clients experience yoga, dance class, art and music, drama along with off campus swimming, sport and pet assisted therapy. There is also a hands on training program for those who would like to learn about the culinary arts that runs for eight weeks.
In Summary
Devereux of Arizona takes young people who have had some difficulties with addiction or with behavior, and those who have experienced a trauma, and gives them a safe place to receive intensive treatment where they feel respected and seen. This is more than just a residential program, this is a safe haven for these kids and their families.
