The Basics
With locations in Elmira, Syracuse, Ithaca and Binghamton, New York, The Sol Stone Center (also known as the Upstate New York Eating Disorder Service) is a broad organization that provides behavioral health support for clients struggling with disordered eating and related issues. It operates four facilities in upstate New York; has more than 25 years experience treating eating disorders, and is open to both men and women. Programs are available in outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP).
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their care plans. Because the focus of these programs is not substance abuse, on-site detox services are not available, but those in need can get referrals to nearby programs. While the contents of each program track are similar, standard outpatient is the most flexible option followed by IOP, which meets three days a week from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. PHP is the most intensive, with 10.5 hours of treatment on weekdays and five hours of treatment on the weekends. Supervised housing can also be provided in this stage.
In all programs, treatment includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and EMDR. Each program includes trauma-informed care and dual diagnosis support with medication management whenever necessary. A wide range of holistic approaches are also used including bodywork, yoga, art therapy and other rotating approaches. Finally, clients also receive nutritional counseling and dietary support including body composition analysis, metabolic testing, meal planning help and exposure therapy in the form of restaurant outings. While 12-step recovery is not required, participants can get referrals to local meetings if they wish.
The staff at the Sol Stone Center consists of LPCs, Certified Eating Disorder Counselors, MDs, nurses and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
As mentioned, the organization also offers structured living for those in the PHP track at the Hoffman House facility. Flexible case management services are also available to help clients during the discharge process. Those looking to continue with treatment at a stepped down rate can also work with staff members to develop aftercare plans.
In Summary
Overall, the Sol Stone Center’s outpatient programs provide comprehensive and all-encompassing care for men and women struggling with eating disorders. Treatment includes evidence-based practices, dietary counseling and holistic approaches to make sure participants are treated from a variety of perspectives. Though the cost of these programs may vary by insurance, Sol Stone Center’s outpatient plans are a strong resource worth considering for those in upstate New York.
