Vita Behavioral Health Review
Located in the city of Van Nuys in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, Vita Behavioral Health is a men’s only detox and residential substance abuse treatment facility. The programs include evidence- based psychiatric work along with medical care, and components of the 12 steps. Clients participate in individual and group therapy with an emphasis on overall health and wellness within a safe, home-like environment.
Accommodations and Food
The one-story, four-bedroom, four-bathroom house offers six beds in total, with three bedrooms being double occupancy and one single for the resident manager. The spacious facility offers all the comforts of home in the quiet residential neighborhood, which is close to restaurants, shops and grocery stores. There is plenty of storage space for personal items in the bedrooms and bathrooms as well.
The rest of the house is elegantly decorated and clean. The living room features comfortable chairs and couches that are situated in front of a mounted flat screen TV, and a lounge also offers a television. There are a few fireplaces throughout the home, and the dining room can seat all clients at a long, wooden table. The big backyard has a relaxing love seat swing and basketball hoop, a covered patio, water feature and shaded stone picnic table.
Three meals a day are made by on-site chefs who create a good mix of down home comfort foods in addition to healthier meals.
Treatment and Staff
The detox and inpatient treatment all takes place on-site, with the detox process being entirely monitored by medical staff and specialized detox techs to ensure as comfortable and safe experience as possible. During this stage, clients are expected to rest and establish physical and mental stability before they are required to attend counseling or 12-step meetings.
Once stabilization is achieved, clients jump into a structured daily schedule of group and individual therapy work. Programming is individualized and holistic, with an emphasis in treatment being on past traumas and experiences that may have lead to the initial addiction in the first place. Dual diagnosis support is a large element of treatment and clients have regular sessions with a psychiatrist and medication management if needed.
Evidence-based therapeutic approaches are integrated into both group and one-on-one sessions. CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR are commonly used, along with more experiential methods such as art, music and recreational therapy.
There is a fairly small staff on-site 24/7 who provide a lot of personalized attention to each client. Besides residential techs, there are LPCs and CADCs.
Extras
Clients go on several sober outings per week and attend recovery-oriented events during their stay at Vita. Outings include beach trips, hiking, swimming and other outdoor activities. Additionally, clients have massage therapy and yoga on a regular basis during their stay, along with life coaching and legal assistance if needed. The family program offers counseling and education, along with a connection to community support through Al-anon.
In Summary
Treatment at Vita is in an intimate setting with personalized attention from staff. There is a focus on trauma and grief, which can uncover some of the underlying issues for addiction, and comprehensive, long-term aftercare planning included. This is a solid choice for men seeking detox and rehab in the Valley.
