Awakenings Sober Living Review

Awakenings operates a 14-bed sober living home in Agoura Hills, a small scenic city on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Awakenings also runs a nearby outpatient program, which opened its doors five years ago and uses a variety of evidence-based and holistic practices at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care.

Awakenings’ sober living division requires clients to be enrolled in outpatient treatment while in residence, either at their facility or others nearby. The house staff provide daily transportation to all treatment activities.

Awakenings was founded by Dr. Shari Corbit, a psychologist who previously served as Vice President of Promises Treatment Centers in Malibu, and Peter Corbitt, a certified clinical neurotherapist.

Accommodations and Amenities

The well-appointed home is located in historic Old Agoura. The residence has two master suites with three beds and four bedrooms with two beds each. Both men and women reside in the home; some clients may stay only while completing the most intensive phase of their outpatient program, while others choose to stay up to 18 months while they integrate into school and work responsibilities.

Awakenings provides all of the clients’ food. In the mornings, residents make their own breakfasts and pack a lunch to take to their treatment center. In the evenings, clients create a communal meal with the help of the kitchen staff.

The residence is pet-friendly and has lounge areas where clients watch TV and play games.

Rules and Regulations

All clients have daily chore assignments. For their first 72 hours in residence, they cannot have access to the internet or cell phones. After, they have limited access through a levels system in which they can increase access through successful participation at home and in treatment.

All clients are required to attend daily 12-step meetings, which Awakenings will transport them to. If clients are enrolled in Awakenings’ PHP or IOP, they have access to dedicated treatment tracks for mental health, eating disorders, substance abuse and chronic pain management. At Awakenings, all clients have individual therapy at least once a week and a neurofeedback session each day they’re attending treatment. Clients also participate in mindfulness training and art therapy.

Extras

There is no size limit on dogs allowed in the treatment center or at the residence. All residents can invite their family members to Awakenings’ family group, held on Wednesdays at the nearby treatment center. As clients progress in the program, they can apply for overnight passes to visit family members.

For exercise and recreation, the house staff transports residents to Agoura Fitness several times each week.

In Summary

Awakenings’ sober living home provides a well-structured, welcoming environment for residents to transition to independent living while completing outpatient treatment. By requiring clients to participate in 12-step fellowships and offering a family groups and family visits, Awakenings helps clients build a sober support system and nurture relationships while receiving the support of Awakenings’ sober living community.
