Based out of Alexandria, Virginia, Center for Discovery Alexandria is a subsidiary of the nationwide behavioral health organization Center for Discovery. The latter is a CARF-accredited company founded in 1997 with a number of facilities throughout the United States, each providing flexible treatment to clients struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring disorders. More specifically, the Alexandria location provides residential treatment for adult women ages 18 and over.
Accommodations and Food
The facility itself is a sprawling residential home with room for a total of eight residents. Clients share their bedrooms with one other roommate; each room comes with two queen beds, carpeted floors, end tables, dressers, modern decor and shared closet space. In addition to the bedrooms, the house also includes group therapy rooms with huge sectional couches, a yoga room, common living areas with cable TV and workstations with computers and an expansive kitchen with marble countertops. While the facility does have on-staff chefs and nutritionists to cook individualized meal plans for the residents, clients gradually take more responsibility for preparing and cooking their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the clinical team design all individualized treatment plans. Because the program is primarily focused on treating clients with eating disorders, on-site detox services for substance abuse are not included. While the specifics may vary, each plan includes individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Other treatment elements include trauma-informed care with EMDR available as necessary.
Because the main focus of the program is on helping clients recover from disordered eating, a major part of the program takes residents through nutritional counseling and cooking classes to help them learn more about food. Groups discussing healthy body image and shame resilience are also included. Though 12-step participation is not required, clients can get referrals to any number of peer support groups upon completing treatment. Dual diagnosis support including medication management is also provided.
The staff at Center for Discovery Alexandria consists of a physician, a psychiatrist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), dietitians, LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Holistic care elements are also included in treatment such as art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, yoga, gym time, zumba classes, nature hikes and mindfulness training. Depending on location, equine therapy may also be included.
In addition to the facility described above, Center for Discovery also runs programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon.
Those who complete primary care can also work with staff to step down the intensity of their care as an aftercare option. The organization also has its own mobile app which alumni can use to track meals, record their feelings and view nutritional information.
