St. Mary’s Healthcare Inpatient Review
Just 20 minutes north of Schenectady, St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, New York, is a full-service behavioral health hospital run by Ascension Health. Founded in 1906, it offers treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders, as well as a variety of primary healthcare programs. While many clients receive treatment on an outpatient basis, it also offers inpatient and detox programs as well.
Accommodations and Food
The inpatient wing has a total of 14 beds. Rooms are gender-specific and based on double occupancy with shared bathrooms, however, there are private rooms available for an additional fee. While the accommodations are clinical rather than residential, stays tend to be short-term, generally lasting 28 days or less. While in residence, clients are served three meals a day in the cafeteria.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an initial intake and assessment to help staff develop an individualized treatment plan. Those in need of medical detox can do so on-site with 24-hour nursing supervision. Once stabilized, residents attend group and individual therapy that uses evidence-based practices, such as CBT, DBT and REBT. Though 12-step participation is not required, residents are encouraged to attend self-help groups. Dual diagnosis support, including medication management, is available.
The staff at St. Mary’s Healthcare includes RNs, MDs, psychologists, LCSWs and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
For clients struggling with opiate addiction, the facility offers methadone maintenance programs with supplementary psychotherapy and crisis services as needed. Clients in need of aftercare can step down to outpatient treatment.
Other services include culturally-specific counseling for Hispanic clients, DUI/DWI assessments and family therapy, which can be added into any structured program.
