Torrance CaliforniaThe Basics

Thelma McMillen Center has provided outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents since 1991. A branch of the Torrance Memorial Hospital, Thelma McMillen Center is a free-standing 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility. Located in Torrance, California, Thelma McMillen Center is in Los Angeles County near medical facilities, the Torrance airport, shopping centers and a few miles from South Bay beaches. Since its founding, Thelma McMillen Center has been headed by Moe Gelbart, Ph.D. and offers an experienced team of mental health professionals.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient treatment is available for both adults and adolescents who are willing to commit to recovery. Prior to enrollment, all potential clients are assessed by an intake counselor. A bio-psycho-social assessment is used to determine each client’s needs and whether they qualify for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). A total of four programs are available for enrollment: the Adult Program, Teen Program, Opioid Addiction Program and the Teen First Step Program. Each program is a three-stage track that gradually decreases frequency of attendance and the client’s involvement. Typically programs last anywhere from six to nine months.

The first phase of treatment includes an intensive approach to healing from addiction. Clients attend a series of workshops and lectures that are psychoeducational. Armed with knowledge about addiction, clients then launch into a 12-step based treatment approach that takes them through the steps. Clients are also required to attend AA or NA meetings to supplement their understanding of the steps and the 12-step framework. Individual and group therapy are attended daily. This phase lasts six to eight weeks and includes four to five days a week of participation. Moving on to the next phase is carefully approved by counselors and based on client progress.

The second phase meets three times per week for six weeks. During this time, clients continue with the same treatment schedule but are also encouraged to attend meetings outside of the facility. Development of an outside support network is essential to their progress. Family sessions are also essential during phase two to further and reinforce the healing process. Sessions are available both during the day and evenings to allow flexibility with schedules.

The final phase of treatment is an aftercare program that finalizes the client’s process.

The Teen Program is slightly adjusted, and only offered in the evenings to allow young clients to attend school. The First Step Program for teens is an early preventative program that meets weekly or four weeks in the evenings. Designed for teens between the ages of 13 and 17, the First Step program focuses on improving communication, learning coping skills and how to deal with pressure from peers.

The Opioid Program fuses with the adult outpatient track but offers additional groups that focus specifically on dealing with medication for addiction and moving on from opiate addiction. All therapeutic activities are facilitated by CADCs but also include Master’s-level counselors, Psychiatrists, Nurses and MFTs.

Extras

The final of the three phases—Continuing Care —provides clients with the ability to carefully discharge from treatment. For 24 weeks in total, clients attend activities once per week. During this time, clients and their families may also continue to attend the multi-family groups and family specific therapy. Families are also encouraged to attend outside Alanon meetings and other forms of support.

Through structured outpatient treatment and 12-step focused care, clients recover at their own pace under the direction of a knowledgeable staff.
