Higher Ground Services Review
Based out of Brewer, Maine, Higher Ground Services is an outpatient treatment facility that has been providing counseling for alcohol and drug addiction, as well as other psychological disorders, since 2011. Using a wide range of evidence-based therapies as well as holistic methods, the social workers and counselors on staff develop individualized treatment plans for each client and help to guide them through the initial stages of early recovery. Clients of all ages are welcome.
Treatment and Staff
All plans incorporate a combination of group and individual therapy and address substance abuse, mental health issues and co-occurring disorders. Methods include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), art therapy, existential therapy and mindfulness training.
There are also specialized group sessions with focused topics such as dual diagnosis support and women-specific issues. Art therapy sessions meet in age-specific groups for children and adults.
Staff is comprised of LCSWs, Licensed Master’s-level CSWs, LCPCs and LADCs.
Extras
While Higher Ground doesn’t offer an official aftercare program, clients can step down their care and shift focus towards relapse prevention strategies. Family and couples therapy are also available.
Higher Ground Services also offers fairly comprehensive case management services to help clients navigate the bureaucracy of state institutions. This includes help with housing, transportation, work, public benefits, legal issues and healthcare. These services can be sand-alone or they can also be combined with any of the above services.

Programming at Higher Ground Services offers a great balance of therapeutic options for outpatient care. While it may not be as rigidly structured as some of its competitors, Higher Ground Services uses many of the latest treatment modalities for addiction recovery, combining evidence based and holistic methods as well as some impressive ancillary services.
