The Basics
Tazwood Center for Wellness provides both a standard outpatient track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Tazewell, Woodford and Lincoln counties in central Illinois. With its headquarters in Perkin, Tazwood also offers substance abuse treatment at the East Peoria and Lincoln locations.
Tazwood was founded in 1972 by the Peoria Mental Hygeine Society. Through a series of mergers, it acquired other community behavioral health facilities and became the Tazwood Center for Wellness in 2013. In addition to substance abuse treatment, Tazwood offers comprehensive mental health services with specialists for children, adolescents as well as for the elderly and their caregivers.
Treatment and Staff
Tazwood provides substance abuse treatment to both self-referred and court-ordered residents. After an assessment, counselors create an individualized treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy. The program’s counselors are primarily CADCs and use the Matrix Model in therapy, which includes CBT and relapse prevention education over a 16-week period. Groups have fewer than sixteen participants.
While clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings as part of their treatment plan, the 12-step framework is referenced in therapy and counselors encourage clients to attend outside peer support meetings, including AA/NA, Refuge Recovery or Celebrate Recovery.
Clients with co-occurring disorders can access mental health treatment with the Master’s-level therapists (including Master’s-level CSWs) and psychiatrists in Tazwood’s Behavioral Health department.
Extras
For aftercare, Tazwood provides a one-hour weekly relapse prevention group for those who have completed their outpatient treatment plan. Families are sometimes asked to attend a client’s therapy sessions if they and the client agree it would be helpful. Tazwood works with local schools to provide in-school prevention and counseling services for young people struggling with substance abuse. It also provides DUI and drug testing services.
