Joani GammillThe Basics

Prior to becoming an interventionist, Joani Gammill worked as a registered nurse. She is also the author of The Interventionist and Painkillers, Heroin and The Road to Sanity. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, she conducts alcohol, drug and process interventions on a nationwide level. Gammill has appeared on a regular basis on the Dr. Phil Show, and is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists. Gammill’s client base includes referrals from individuals, medical professionals, drug rehabs and families.

The Background

Gammill is a recovering addict who shares about her personal experiences so that she can help other suffering alcoholics and addicts. As an active addict, she wrote an urgent email to Dr. Phil who brought her onto his show and conducted an intervention, which she credits as saving her life. Following a successful stint at a drug rehab, she was inspired to work in the field of addiction recovery. Gammill has more than 20 years of clinical experience, and an additional five years working as a staff registered nurse at an inpatient treatment facility. She founded InterventionRn.Com, her privately held company in 2006 and works as an interventionist on an independent level. As a recovering addict, she utilizes a 12-step program and helps families and clients do the same.

The Approach

Gammill meets on an intimate level with the family, and prepares them for the intervention. She views each intervention as unique, and utilizes an approach that is best suited for the situation. She works with many treatment centers including Hazelden Betty Ford, and helps the family locate an appropriate and affordable facility for their loved one. She coaches the participants, transports the client to treatment, and assists with the client’s admission.

Her work as a registered nurse has made her very aware of the physical impact addiction can have on the body—including withdrawal symptoms and delirium tremens. Because of this, she insists on personally escorting each of her clients to treatment or detox following the intervention. Gammill also provides aftercare support for both clients and their families. This can include referrals for counseling and support groups.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Gammill is an empathetic and sought-after interventionist who is passionate about her work. She offers sliding scale billing to financially challenged clients. In her book, she says that after a successful intervention, she always goes through the McDonald’s drive-thru, orders coffee and blasts classic rock on the way home. She writes, “I feel complete, and I am sober. God is near.”
