The Basics
Located in West Virginia, Northwood Health Systems is a network of behavioral health facilities with substance abuse programming. Specializing in cost-effective treatment, each client receives focused care and connected with community resources for a reliable recovery foundation.
With 17 branches, NHS is available to residents of West Virginia and their families for all behavioral health needs. NHS also makes detox services available through their crisis unit, DUI classes and outpatient services.
Treatment and Staff
All potential clients must visit an intake counselor at the walk-in clinic between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm daily. All intake is first-come first-served, so all are encouraged to arrive as early as possible to ensure an appointment.
During intake, clients are assessed for the acuity of their chemical dependence and any extra needs including detox and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). Clients requiring detox are referred to the crisis unit. Under 24-hour care, clients are typically detoxed within three to five days under the care of doctors and nurses (LPN). A team of psychiatrists are available for Suboxone treatment following detox.
The First Step program is a 45 day treatment track tailored to either standard outpatient intensity or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The standard outpatient track meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11:45 am. Clients attend both group and individual therapy for one hour daily. Clients enrolled in both tracks follow the same hourly schedule, but those enrolled in IOP attend up to five days per week. Each client is expected to participate in treatment for 45 consecutive days but are allowed to make-up a couple of days due to special circumstances.
All therapy techniques utilize CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Staff members include LPCs and CASACs. Northwood works with a range of clientele that differ in need, so staff members are trained to treat co-occurring disorders. NHS considers seeking outside support as integral to sustaining recovery and all clients must attend 12-step meetings while enrolled. Outpatient programming ends by 11:45 am every day allowing clients to attend an AA meeting across the street at noon at a local church. All clients are drug tested during their stay ($30 per test) to ensure abstinence.
Extras
In addition, NHS also offers a six-week DUI program which gives clients the option of attending treatment at two different facilities; one offering classes from 5 to 8 pm on Tuesdays and the other from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesdays. All DUI groups are outpatient and education-based.
