West Sound Treatment CenterThe Basics

Located about an hour west of Seattle in Port Orchard, Washington, West Sound Treatment Center has provided a range of community-based services for over 30 years. The only non-profit organization serving the Kitsap County, West Sound offers chemical dependency treatment, as well as supportive housing, mental health services, and vocational and educational training and resources. Working closely with Kitsap County Jail, West Sound coordinates services to facilitate re-entry for substance abusers completing sentences.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are provided individualized treatment plans based on comprehensive evaluations. These include evidence based practices like Motivational Interviewing (MI) and client-centered therapy. Introduction to 12-step groups is made, with meetings for many different fellowships held on-site. Clients partake in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) if they require frequent treatment for substance abuse, without medically monitored detox or 24/7 supervision needed. Those who require those services are offered referrals.

The IOP consists of group therapy, individual therapy, education sessions and 12-step meetings. These occur four days a week, on Mondays through Thursdays, in either morning or evening sessions. Both times are offered to accommodate clients with school, family or work obligations. Groups focus on relapse prevention, life skills, personal development and anger management. Individual behavioral therapy tackles guilt, shame, depression, stress, anxiety, coping skills and communication skills. A certified chemical dependency professional facilitates all group and individual sessions. Program length varies, but is typically at least 20 weeks.

Clients with co-occurring disorders are offered mental health counseling, as well as referrals to services that can provide medication management.

Extras

The family program consists of weekly group, individual and education sessions that occur on Friday at 10 am for 20 weeks. Families learn about the causes and conditions that lead to substance abuse, communication skills and how to deal with their own emotions. Participation in Al-Anon is encouraged, with meetings held on-site.

There are five housing programs available. These provide safe and sober housing for men, women, parents and their children and are separated by gender.

The jail program provides clients housing and recovery support services. These include educational navigation and job seeking training, as well as life skills, counseling and personal case management.

The vocational services offered by West Sound are a weekly program that meets every Friday at 10am. It is available to those in treatment or recovery for substance abuse, those that are homeless, chronically unemployed, dislocated workers and offenders relocating into society. The program includes intensive vocational assessment and training, helping clients learn practical skills needed to find work or employment.

In Summary

West Sound Treatment Center provides essential treatment services for the Kitsap community. The IOP provides a strong and structured support for clients, while introduction to 12-step groups means clients and their families are easily able to continue participation in their newly established sober network. The comprehensive and personalized vocational services are an excellent resource, as many substance abusers and ex-offenders require assistance seeking employment. With services and treatment provided on a sliding scale based on income, West Sound ensures low-income clients access to care.
