Yellowstone RecoveryYellowstone Recovery Review

Yellowstone Recovery has been providing affordable residential substance abuse treatment in Orange County, California for nearly 20 years. It operates residential treatment houses in SoCal beach communities like Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, and offers detox, inpatient care, extended care, outpatient care, and sober living houses. In other words, Yellowstone offers a full continuum of addiction care within a “traditional” 12-step framework, all provided in close proximity to the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Accommodations and Food

Yellowstone Recovery’s residences are converted private houses in quiet neighborhoods. They aren’t necessarily luxury homes, but all of the properties are comfortable, clean and well appointed, with a family-style vibe. The majority of Yellowstone’s clients stay in rooms shared with one other person, but clients who would prefer a private room can be accommodated for an extra fee. The shared rooms are large enough to be comfortable and provide as much privacy as possible.

Meals are prepared family style, so the menu really depends on clients’ culinary skills and roommates, although specific food requests can be added to the weekly grocery list.

Treatment and Staff

Most of the therapy is Yellowstone Recovery provided during its day program at its central location, separate from clients’ living facilities. There are around 60 men and women who stay at Yellowstone Recovery houses at any given time, and about 20 staff members. New clients are first given a full bio-psycho-social assessment and an individualized treatment plan is created. If detox is needed, Yellowstone provides it. A medical doctor checks in regularly during the detox process, which can last for several days or up to a week, depending on the needs of each client.

When detox is completed, Yellowstone’s primary care phase begins. During this 30-day period, clients are introduced to the 12-step lifestyle. They attend 20-hours a week of group therapy and see a counselor for individual therapy at least once a week, more often if needed. The total ratio of staff to clients is around 1 to 3. Therapy groups at Yellowstone cover a wide variety of topics, including anger management, identifying triggers and fostering personal growth. Yellowstone also stresses experiential therapy to help clients discover how their relationships and attitudes affect their behavior and recovery. Along with group and individual therapy, clients do a lot of 12-step work. Weekdays end with an AA/NA meeting in the local community. On weekends, residents study the Big Book in the morning and attend AA meetings in the evening.

If clients decide to stay on past the initial 30-day period, they move to the next phase of the program. The idea is to take what has been learned in the initial month of intensive treatment and apply it to real-life situations, so clients spend weekdays looking for a job in the local community. Once employed, they work during the day and attend AA meetings at night, taking advantage of the peer group and support that Yellowstone provides.

From there, clients can choose to step down to attend the outpatient program where they attend three group meetings per week and individual therapy sessions twice a month. Some residents continue to live in YR-operated sober living houses after the initial 90 days of treatment. A full time house manager oversees these properties, and residents are required to maintain sobriety, work the steps with their sponsor and volunteer in the local community.

YR is not a psychiatric facility, but will work with outside psychiatric caregivers to support clients with co-occurring disorders. the staff includes CADCs and rehab techs.

Extras

The family support group at YR helps addicts’ loved ones learn how to best deal with their loved ones’ addictions. Along with the support that comes from meeting other people in the same situation, the family program includes education about setting realistic boundaries, how to cope with relapses and how to aid in the recovery process.

All the houses have individual weight machines and offers yoga, jazzercise and creative dance classes. Yellowstone Recovery clients also participate in a variety of sober-fun activities, including camping, regular softball games and even skydiving. Canine sober-coaches Ruby and CandyMae provide “puppy therapy,” widely regarded as the most adorable approach to treating addiction.

In Summary

Those in the OC looking for a 12-step-oriented recovery program at a reasonable price will find Yellowstone Recovery a great choice. The program’s support through early recovery and sober living makes it an excellent option for people who need support through the delicate post-rehab period in recovery. However, those with serious psychiatric problems might not be better served by a program more focused on those with co-occurring disorders.
