The Basics
Located in Omaha, Nebraska, the Stephen Center offers multiple substance abuse recovery services for the community including residential treatment, an emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing and transitional living apartments for men. The gender-specific housing at Stephen Center is available for men aged 18 and over who have completed residential treatment and are in need of a sober-supportive environment. Situated just around the corner from the Hero Residential Treatment Center, Stephen Center has provided independent sober living for single men in early sobriety since 1984.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Stephen Center Transitional Living apartment complex has eight single-occupancy units. Each efficiency apartment has one bedroom, a living room, bathroom and small kitchen. Furnishings include a twin bed, dresser, sofa, kitchen table, stove and refrigerator. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available on-site. While clients are responsible for their own food and personal items, those who are not fully employed are invited to eat at the shelter located around the corner.
Rules and Regulations
All clients must have completed inpatient substance abuse treatment and have at least 30 days of sobriety. Substance abuse, violence, vandalism and any disruptive behavior is grounds for immediate eviction. While visiting is permitted during the day, overnight visits are prohibited. Clients are drug- and alcohol-tested on a weekly basis. Laundry room hours are from 8 am until 10 pm. In addition, clients are responsible for keeping their units clean and can expect weekly inspections by the apartment manager.
Residents are required to be employed by the end of their first month and until such time must volunteer at the Hero Center or the shelter. Aftercare counseling is mandated at the Hero Center and entails one individual and one group session per week. All sessions are facilitated by CADCs.
In Summary
Stephen Center offers single-occupancy units for men in early sobriety who have completed residential substance abuse treatment. With individual apartments, clients are encouraged to develop independence and autonomy while still having access to group, individual and aftercare counseling. Stephen Center has a good balance of both privacy and support at an affordable rate.
