RS EDEN Review
Located in Minneapolis, RS EDEN has been a leader in providing substance abuse and other community services since 1971 and founded the first therapeutic treatment program for women in the Midwest. In its approach to treatment, the organization reflects a deep understanding of the complexity of addiction. Today, its chemical dependency program for women uses a four-pronged recovery model for those in need of treatment and a new start.
Accommodations and Food
The Lorraine Apartments house RS EDEN’s highly-structured residential and outpatient programs for high-risk and pregnant women. Residents stay in the comfortable, furnished apartments, each shared by two women. The apartments are under strict around-the-clock supervision to ensure safety.
The cafeteria on the grounds provides healthy meals to clients. There’s also a fully-equipped gym in the facility.
While mothers are attending outpatient treatment, their pre-school children have the benefit of top-notch childcare that addresses their developmental, emotional and cognitive needs. School-age children attend their regular schools.
Half of the facility is reserved for a men’s treatment program, but the two programs are completely gender-separate, with men and women never being in the same area at the same time. This is designed to maximize treatment effectiveness.
Treatment and Staff
RS EDEN’s outpatient program is for pregnant women and women with children. During the day, clients attend group and individual therapy facilitated by licensed mental health professionals using CBT. At the end of a day of treatment, clients can return to the comfort of their own homes. Residential clients also participate in individual and group sessions.
Due to the complications women often have during pregnancy, health services are provided regularly. The nursing staff oversees perinatal checkups. Health education programs are held twice a week on topics that include hygiene, family planning, sexuality, nutrition, HIV/STD prevention and smoking cessation.
The staff is entirely female to ensure that the women in the program feel comfortable. All residents are seen by a licensed psychologist, Groups are run by certified drug and alcohol counselors and monitored by registered nurses. AA and other 12-step meetings are held in-house during the week, while residents are allowed to attend outside meetings on the weekends.
Extras
An intensive aftercare program is offered after a client completes outpatient or residential treatment. Community resources are employed during this time to ensure that clients find employment. If a client wants to complete aftercare, they must have a job or be enrolled in school
Vocational and educational services are available to women who complete treatment.
In Summary
With a long history and an excellent reputation within the Minneapolis social services community, RS EDEN addresses the complex needs of women with chemical dependency issues. The facility provides a safe residential unit for women and their children that provides good childcare. Outpatient treatment provides a similar level of family care. All told, a woman looking for treatment that will also help with her children will find an excellent program at RS EDEN.
