Community Psychiatric Clinic Review

Community Psychiatric Clinic in Seattle, Washington offers behavioral health and substance abuse treatment through six outpatient facilities serving residents of Seattle and King County. CPC’s primary site for adult chemical dependency treatment is in the funky Fremont neighborhood, but treatment is also available at its Lake City, Northgate, Wallingford and Belltown sites. Founded in 1953,  CPC serves more than 5,000 individuals each year who have co-ocurring mental health disorders in addition to chemical dependency. A mental health diagnosis is mandatory for admission into the program.

Treatment and Staff

In an initial telephone screening, prospective clients are asked about their drug and alcohol concerns in addition to basic profile information. Next comes an in-person assessment with a chemical dependency counselor to determine if a client’s issues meet the criteria for CPC treatment. This typically lasts for two to three hours, after which an individual may be referred to a different provider if CPC can’t address their needs. If enrolled, a client is assigned a primary counselor and recovery treatment options are discussed. Detox is not offered.

Treatment includes individual and group therapy sessions each twice a week for intensive outpatient (IOP). Group topics include drug and alcohol education, relapse prevention, stress, anxiety and anger management, cravings and relationships. Clients are introduced to community resources, opportunities for family education and involvement, peer support groups like AA/NA, case management and other tools that help increase their ability to manage mental health and drug or alcohol problems. CPC is not 12-step affiliated, but encourages clients to attend a support group in conjunction with treatment.

Clients voluntarily submit to treatment for a period of time that works for them. Typically, that’s between three and four months initially, with treatment four times a week. It then tapers down to twice a week and finally once a week. Finally, treatment sessions are monthly, though may go on for a longer period of time. Sessions are about two hours.

CPC staff consists of chemical dependency professionals that have two to three years of higher education in relevant fields of substance abuse and mental health. There are no psychiatrists or psychologists on staff.

Extras

CPC assists with aftercare, housing and vocational services support.

In Summary

In addition to recovery, CPC’s outpatient and IOP programs are designed to help restore the psychological, physical and social well-being of clients to boost their chance of sustained recovery and normal living. Offering individual and group therapy, education, peer support and a primary counselor who remains their point-of-contact, CPC’s range of payment options makes it a good option for people of varied budgets.
