Abstemious Outpatient Clinic Review
Abstemious Outpatient Clinic was founded by Executive Director Ron Phelps in 1992. Operating out of an renovated ranch house in Spokane Valley, Washington, the small outpatient clinic combines traditional psychotherapy and a psycho-educational approach to battle substance abuse.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, an assessment with a counselor is completed. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. For those who move on to Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), this includes four three-hour weekly group therapy and educational sessions and at least one 60-minute individual session. Traditional talk therapy, as opposed to an evidence-based approach such as CBT, is used during individual and group sessions.
The intensive phase of treatment is usually for a total of 72 hours. Upon completion, clients move to outpatient treatment. Outpatient clients meet with their counselors as needed and attend one to two group sessions per week. Group topics for both tracks include relapse prevention, the disease concept of addiction and stress management. Clients see educational films about substance abuse and learn the basics about the 12 steps. However, attendance at AA/NA is not required.
While dual diagnosis support and detox services are not provided, clients in need of these get psychiatric and medical referrals. Additionally, those who suffer from trauma-based issues are provided with referrals to see an outside PTSD specialist who works closely with the rehab.
Phelps, the founder and executive director. is a Bachelor’s-level counselor who has more than 36 years of experience in the chemical dependency field. Dr. Michael J. Metcalf serves as the clinic’s medical director. Besides Phelps and Metcalf, there is one licensed addiction counselor on staff and several administrative staff members. The clinic currently has a 50-client roster.
Extras
Abstemious Outpatient Clinic offers a family program and also provides referrals to outside recovery sources such as Alanon.
A two-year DUI and criminal justice treatment protocol is broken down into three phase. Phase one consists of weekly treatment for three months and includes three group/educational sessions. Phase two, a six-month protocol, includes one weekly group session while phase three, which lasts for the remainder of the two-year period, includes one monthly group session. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled per client’s needs.
In Summary
Those seeking evidence-based treatment or a more intense 12-step approach may be better off looking elsewhere. However, Abstemious Outpatient Clinic offers affordable, long-term outpatient care for those who are more comfortable with traditional talk therapy and are looking for a basic, no-frills substance abuse program.
