New Perceptions Review
New Perceptions is a short-term facility for substance abuse and mental health issues. While Southern California is a mecca for expensive rehabs, this program is very affordable; they even throw in a complimentary detox. Clients attend AA/NA meetings on a daily basis and, by participating in this community, create a recovery-based lifestyle.
Accommodations and Food
The 11-person residential program is set up in a comfortable home in the San Fernando Valley community of Northridge. Bedrooms are shared between two clients and feature twin-sized beds, hardwood floors and adequate closet space. The home also has a large kitchen, a living room with a TV and fireplace, dining room, therapy room and recreation room.
When it comes to food, a cook prepares three meals a day that are served family-style and include favorites such as mac and cheese, burgers and lasagna. Coffee is available in the morning and special dietary requests can usually be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment time is usually between 30 and 90 days, beginning with medically monitored detox when needed. This process lasts for two to five days and is included in the monthly cost.
The New Perceptions program is based on the 12 steps and, in addition to the daily meetings, clients take part in individual counseling two to three times a week. Group therapy occurs on a daily basis, with topics such as relapse prevention, codependency, life skills, introduction to the 12 steps, trauma, processing and meditation.
This program also addresses mental health issues, providing dual diagnosis support for depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. A consulting psychiatrist can be seen on an as-needed basis, although this service is not included in the monthly cost.
There is a transitional housing program for those who have completed residential. This structured, supportive living environment requires that all members be employed or attending school. Clients spend their days in the real world before returning home for group therapy and meetings. The length of this program depends on the individual.
The staff includes a Master’s-level therapist, counselors, a medical doctor and consulting psychiatrist.
Extras
For fitness, residents have access to weights and cardio machines. A yoga instructor comes on-site twice a week for guided yoga classes.
After the first week of residential treatment, clients are allowed to attend movie night on Saturdays and have visitors on Sundays. While there is no set family program, clients who wish to involve their family members in treatment may do so. This can be done through individual counseling sessions with the primary therapist.
In Summary
New Perceptions offers an intimate setting for recovery. With a small client load, sunny location and affordable pricing, rehab doesn’t have to be a frightening or bank-breaking experience.
