Family Health Centers of San Diego Review
Since 1970, Family Health Centers of San Diego has been serving Southern California with five main locations, 18 primary care clinics, six dental clinics and four behavioral health facilities. As a community-oriented non-profit, their mission is to provide high-quality healthcare and supportive services to all, with a special commitment to those who are uninsured, low-income or medically under-served. Within their comprehensive structure, Family Health Centers of San Diego offers Intensive Outpatient (IOP) care as a major part of their services.
Treatment and Staff
Family Health Center’s IOP is comprised of four sessions a week, generally lasting for six months. The program is mostly group therapy, with each session lasting between an hour-and-a-half and three hours a day. Clients also have the option of choosing morning or evening sessions.
Individual counseling and dual diagnosis sessions are also offered twice a month. Though these do not rely strictly on 12-step philosophy, some of AA’s core concepts are also addressed. In keeping with the overall community focus, their program is also specially tailored to the needs of the LGBT community, as well as those who are HIV positive.
The staff at FHC is made up of licensed counselors; while there isn’t a psychiatrist on staff, referrals can be provided for those who need one.
Extras
Because of the wide range of services at FHC, clients have many supplemental programs to choose from in order to create a treatment plan that fits their needs. There is even a separate outpatient track for mental health, which offers a similar schedule of counseling and additional options for couples and children.
FHC also has a few special offerings like their HIV program, which provides testing, counseling, case management and peer advocacy for those with the disease. There’s also their healthcare program for teens, which includes pregnancy prevention counseling and STD testing. Finally, FHC also offers what they call their Black Infant Health program, which is geared specifically towards assisting young African-American mothers.
In Summary
Overall, Family Health Center of San Diego’s commitment to serving its community is self-evident as proven by its multiple, specialized programs. Its outpatient offering helps clients address their issues and triggers, and also helps them learn the necessary tools for relapse prevention. After they have completed their program, clients of FHC have access to continuing aftercare through less intensive groups and further one-on-one counseling. As a final bonus, FHC is very affordable compared to similar facilities.
