Project Turnabout Review
Project Turnabout is itself a testament to recovery. In 2003, the 89-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility in southern Minnesota was struck by a tornado and since then it has been rebuilding and restoring. Thanks to overwhelming support from the community, the non-profit organization never closed its doors or neglected its mission to provide comprehensive detoxification as well as medical and spiritual care for those addicted to substances and gambling.
Accommodations and Food
Project Turnabout’s main campus is located in the small town of Granite Falls on a windswept prairie with granite outcroppings. The facility has a late 90s vibe with oak wood and plenty of muted khaki, dusty blue, burgundy and evergreen. It is clean and comfortable. Bedrooms house two or three residents with a common lounge area for community activities, education and group therapy. Food is served buffet-style in a common dining room.
Treatment and Staff
Detox is available at Project Turnabout through the medical service unit, which is staffed at all times by registered and licensed nursing personnel, who are also available to residents in the inpatient rehabilitation program. Treatment programs are 12-step based and are tailored to each individual but typical days include lectures, group, activities, recreation time and personal work time and, of course, three square meals.
Project Turnabout also offers one of the few inpatient gambling treatment programs in the US. The 20-bed facility is located on the same campus and addresses the myriad ramifications of compulsive gambling. Treatment includes Motivational Interviewing (MI), 12-step facilitation and other evidence-based therapies. Group therapy is particularly beneficial in relieving the isolation and secrecy common among compulsive gamblers. The program also addresses family relationships and finances, which are often severely affected by the behavior. During the course of treatment, many residents also come to grips with co-occurring drug or alcohol problems and receive referrals for chemical dependency treatment as well.
Many of the rules at Project Turnabout are similar to those at other rehab facilities (no cell phones, no laptops and restricted access to technology in general) but some are reminiscent of a parochial prep school (no leggings or yoga pants, no tank tops and other clothing restrictions). Additionally, personal reading materials and hobby items (e.g., knitting) are not allowed.
Project Turnabout has a small but well-educated staff with a client-to-staff ratio of seven-to-one.
Extras
Project Turnabout has an ample weight room and gymnasium with basketball court and volleyball net. An attractive chapel building is located on the campus and is staffed by a chaplain, although the program is not affiliated with any specific religious group.
In Summary
Project Turnabout is a no-frills program and may be a good fit for those looking for a place away from home to find recovery. Gamblers looking for thorough residential treatment could be well-served here.
