Waters Edge Recovery is a relatively new substance abuse treatment organization, having only started in 2012 in Stuart, Florida, that operates out of three different facilities. Though there’s no on-site detox, Waters Edge offers family therapy, residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and a combination sober living and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse.

Waters Edge specializes in treating business executives, first responders, healthcare workers and others in high-stress professions, as well as seniors. Treatment is individualized and coed, with residential care available in two tiers. A complete stay lasts 42 days, with clients spending the first 21 at the Jensen Beach Waterfront complex in Fort Pierce followed by 21 days at the Waters Edge complex in Stuart. Female-only housing is available at Equestrian Ranch in Stuart, where both tiers are offered in the same location.

Accommodations and Food

Accommodations for inpatient treatment at all Waters Edge facilities are in comfortable mini-condos. Four clients share each two-bedroom condo with two to a room, each with his or her own closet and dresser. TVs and Wi-Fi are provided in all rooms. Each facility houses no more than 20 to 30 at a time. All three locations are in suburban settings, affording easy access to nearby gyms and grocery stores.

Some of the rooms in the Stuart complex overlook the St. Lucie River, while the Jensen Beach location offers basketball courts and is only two miles from a park. No meals are included at the locations and all clients are responsible for feeding themselves.

Treatment and Staff

The first tier care at Waters Edge focuses on stabilizing clients, while the second begins the transition back to regular life. Residential treatment requires 25 hours of combined individual and group therapy sessions per week, the ratio of which depends on each client’s needs. Treatment can also include art, music and meditation therapy components. The same services are offered in the PHP, which is typically a month-long and excludes overnight stay. Clients attend the program Monday through Friday. The six weeks of inpatient and four weeks of PHP are also offered as package, though prospective clients can also choose freely between the two.

For those who have already completed treatment and want ongoing support, Waters Edge offers a sober living program in conjunction with IOP. The combination program typically lasts eight weeks, though clients have the option to stay longer. The primary focus is on integrating with the community, finding a sponsor and getting employment or enrolling in school. Therapy sessions run three days a week from 5 pm to 8 pm, with clients attending one individual therapy and two group therapy sessions weekly. Random drug screenings and Breathalyzer tests are conducted, and a midnight curfew is observed every day. Clients are allowed to have their own car.

After IOP, clients can move down to regular outpatient treatment. In this program, a counselor is assigned to each client for individual therapy while a different one runs all group sessions.

Extras

Some extra activities offered in the first tier at the Jensen complex include basketball, billiards, ping pong, pool, volleyball, beach outings and movie outings. In tier two at Waters Edge, there’s fishing, movie and beach outings, paintball and a fire walk as a final rite of passage. The Equestrian Ranch offers horseback riding.

In Summary

Though it is a new organization with only three years’ experience, Waters Edge Recovery offers a wide spectrum of services at a variety of calming environments. There is plenty of choice offered at the facilities and the programs are available to anyone regardless of how far along they are in recovery. Overall, Waters Edge is a good resource for those in Florida seeking comprehensive care.
