Vista Taos Renewal CenterVista Taos Renewal Center Review

Set against stark desert terrain and a vivid cerulean sky, Vista Taos Renewal Center is located in Taos, New Mexico, where artist Georgia O’Keefe drew inspiration for her paintings. Since 1994, the facility has provided residential treatment services for adults suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Clients are offered intimate care in this Southwestern sanctuary.

Accommodations and Food

Vista Taos’ adobe-like structure and blue trim suggest the influence of Taos Pueblo, the ancient Native American settlement. The adult residential program has an 16-bed capacity, with men and women  separated into separate wards. Comfortable, gender-specific rooms are shared, each with full-sized beds and a nightstand, lamp and wall paintings. A Southwest motif is evident in the furnishings. Each room has a bathroom and a lovely private patio decorated with potted flowers, a hummingbird feeder or wind chimes and patio chairs.

Residents break bread together on wooden tables inside an airy dining room with open-beamed ceilings, chandeliers and American Indian décor. The tables are beautifully adorned with stoneware dinnerware and rustic mugs, set amid fresh-cut flower arrangements. A private chef prepares home-cooked meals, accommodating all types of diets, including vegan, vegetarian, Heart Healthy and kosher.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Vista Taos typically lasts 30 days. Prior to admission, a physical exam and psychiatric evaluation must be completed and residents receive individualized treatment plans. Detox is provided, if necessary, and medication-assisted treatment is also available.

With an emphasis on a 12 step-based curriculum, weekly treatment includes individual therapy, three to four group therapy sessions and AA/NA meetings. Groups cover such topics as step study, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, grief, trauma and Big Book study. There are AA-specific question and answer groups for those not familiar with 12-step protocol. Through psychodrama therapy, residents role-play and explore inner conflicts and hidden emotions.

A typical daily schedule includes breakfast between 7 am and 7:30 am, medication management between 7:30 am and 8 am, 12-step homework and reading time between 8 am and 9 am, followed by a morning meditation and circle between 9 am and 10 am. Group therapy is between 10 am and noon, followed by lunch until 12:30 pm, and then a break to focus on homework. Between 1 pm and 3 pm is equine therapy, followed by yoga until 4 pm, individual therapy between 4 pm and 5 pm, more homework time from 5 pm to 5:30 pm, followed by dinner until 6 pm. From 6 pm to 7 pm, residents continue with their studies, followed by an on-site AA/NA meeting from 7 pm to 9 pm. After a brief wrap-up group, followed by more study time, lights out is at 11 pm.aff

Vista Taos’ Casa Feliz extended care program offers clients from one to 12 months of treatment that includes individual therapy, group therapy, 12-step meetings, a family program and substance abuse education, as well as an opportunity for residents to pursue educational or vocational goals. Sponsors and mentors work closely with residents, easing their re-entry into society.

The staff includes Master’s-level addiction counselors, LCSWs, a residential director, an extended care director, an equine specialist, a clinical nurse practitioner, a 12-step coach, a massage therapist and a CADC II.

Extras

Vista Taos offers a plethora of alternative therapies including yoga, massage therapy, meditation and acupuncture.

A comprehensive three-day family program is offered for relatives. The program includes addiction education, psychodrama therapy, family meditation, group therapy and equine therapy. Relatives also attend Al-Anon meetings.

In Summary

Set against a gorgeous backdrop, Vista Taos Renewal Center offers a luxury 12 step-based treatment in a haven where a client suffering from chemical dependency can truly find recovery and serenity.
