Spencer House Men’s Recovery Center Review

Under the Behavioral Healthcare Partners of Central Ohio umbrella, Spencer House Men’s Recovery Center is a non-profit, state-funded residential treatment program for addiction and substance abuse. Founded in Newark, Ohio in 1969 as a men’s halfway house, Spencer House and has grown into a full residential treatment program. Although a majority of the clients here are court-ordered, the program does have a number of voluntary clients as well since the state funding makes treatment free to residents of Licking and Knox County.

Accommodations and Food

Spencer House looks very much like a large residential home and has a total of 16 beds. The rooms are dorm-like and typically based on double occupancy—equipped with two twin beds and minimal storage for personal belongings. However, clients who have shown stability and responsibility during treatment are sometimes transferred into rooms which with up to four beds.

As a part of the program at Spencer House, clients cook their own meals. A small, designated group is provided with ingredients, materials and even a menu to complete breakfast, lunch or dinner for all the men in residence. This group rotates regularly so all clients get a chance to participate at some point during their treatment.

Spencer House has an exercise room in the basement and clients are encouraged to work out during their free time. Personal computers and other electronics are not allowed during treatment but as clients get further along in the program, they are allowed some cell phone use. The facility also has a common living room area where clients are allowed to watch TV.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Spencer House begins with an assessment. If counselors believe that a client is a good fit and will be well served in their program, they are placed on a waiting list until a bed becomes available. The facility does not provide detox and recommends that all clients in need of stabilization take care of that phase of recovery prior to coming in for an assessment.

The residential program at Spencer House runs for six months, consists of group and individual therapy and uses CBT as a treatment modality. The program is 12-step oriented and requires clients to attend local AA or NA meetings. Random urine testing is done throughout treatment as well. Spencer House also offers dual diagnosis support and clients in need meet one-on-one with a mental health counselor. There is no doctor on staff but Spencer House refers clients to a local hospital if they are in need of medical assistance.

Days at Spencer House are highly structured, with strict wake up and lights out times. Clients are required do daily chores to help maintain the house, including the aforementioned preparation of the meals.

Towards the completion of treatment, clients are encouraged to get jobs; after discharge, they are moved into stable housing to further assist with reintegration into society.

The program at Spencer House is run by two licensed addiction counselors.

Extras

Spencer House offers an aftercare program which consists of a weekly group meeting where counselors check in with former clients and make sure they are on track with their recovery and adjusting well to outside life.

It also has a family program where clients’ relatives meet one-on-one with counselors weekly. The purpose is to help educate the family members on addiction and help them support their loved one and create a safe home environment for them.

In Summary

Spencer House provides a structured environment for men looking to focus on their recovery, gain independence and learn how to be of service to their community. Although many of the clients are court-ordered, the strict rules at Spencer House ensure that all of residents take responsibility for themselves and show a genuine interest in getting healthy and regaining control of their lives.
