PRIDE InstitutePRIDE Institute Review

In 1986 PRIDE Institute opened its doors and became the first rehab in the United States to offer addiction treatment exclusively to the LGBT community. Studies show that, on average, 25 percent of the gay and transgender population have substance abuse problems, as opposed to the less than 10 percent of the general population. Researchers and medical professionals attribute this to the community’s struggle with discrimination and stigmatization based on a general bias toward opposite sex relationships. The 30-to-90-day program at PRIDE addresses the stresses associated with heterosexism and its contribution to the environmental factors of addiction.

Accommodations and Food

The residential treatment quarters at PRIDE’s Eden Prairie, Minnesota facility are made up of shared, same-sex bedrooms and feature a sort of utilitarian décor. Up to 40 clients can be accommodated. Clients are expected to clean their own rooms and do their own laundry.

There is an on-site gym and the menu is generally healthy—fruits and veggies and salads—with dinners often of the stir-fry persuasion with ethnic influences. The in-house chef is happy to cater to any dietary needs and coffee is available all day.

Treatment and Staff

PRIDE provides support, education and holistic healing. The program at PRIDE is progressive, focusing on support for addiction recovery as well as understanding about the negative effects of being a part of the LGBT community. The facility offers a 12-step based curriculum that begins with a medically monitored withdrawal; treatment is then administered through guided step work, CBT, holistic and wellness approaches and psychiatric care for depression, anxiety and other mental and emotional imbalances. Clients are strongly encouraged to do work that builds self-esteem and work on self-acceptance. PRIDE’s 24-hour medical staff is trained in trauma, sexual health and family issues. Special focus is put on common health and social issues of the LGBT community, such as being HIV positive or living with AIDS.

Extras

Acupuncture is available and the facility reimburses travel expenses for clients who complete the program. Additionally, beyond its inpatient division, it also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) (with lodging, if needed or desired), weekend family programs and an outpatient sexual health program.

In Summary

While the circumstances and close quarters can be challenging, they have also been the foundation for many tight bonds and life-long friendships. And that is certainly something to be PRIDEful about.
