Lifetime RecoveryLifetime Recovery Review

Located in San Antonio, Texas, Lifetime Recovery is the oldest and largest residential substance abuse treatment center in South Texas. Founded in 1963 as a nonprofit organization, Lifetime Recovery has been a beacon for those with limited financial resourses. Their residential program, which caters only to men, is primarily clients who have been referred by the justice system as an alternative to incarceration. The outpatient program is co-ed.

Accommodations and Food

Lifetime is located on a pastoral, 26-acre colonial campus. The Spanish-style architecture was built 75 years ago and includes the administrative offices, residential dorms, meeting rooms, a weight room and a dining area, all within walking distance of each other.

Clients sleep in an open space separated into cubicles, with three to four people per cube, making up a total of  94 beds. They are not allowed to bring personal computers or cell phones with them but Lifetime does have a media room with a TV.

Meals are simple and efficient, served three times a day. While Lifetime doesn’t cater specifically to those with dietary restrictions, it does offer several options for each meal. Coffee is provided in the morning only and snacks and soda are offered in vending machines located throughout campus.

Treatment and Staff

Upon arrival, all clients undergo an assessment to determine the best individualized treatment plan. If detox is needed, clients are referred to an outside facility before admission. The residential program for men is 90 days and combines CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and 12-step techniques. Residents wake up at 7  am and adhere to a strict program of individual therapy, group therapy and educational classes on addiction. Daily schedules vary according to the individual treatment plan.

After inpatient, clients are invited to step down to the supportive residential phase where they continue to live at the facility but are given the opportunity to find employment and have more day-to-day freedoms. Clients in this phase are also still required to attend individual and group therapy in the evenings.

The outpatient program, which lasts five months, offers counseling on addiction and the problems that surround it to men, women and their families. It can be used as a freestanding program or as an intensive aftercare program for men who have completed residential treatment. For the first five weeks, outpatient includes 10 hours of group and one hour of individual therapy per week. The next four months include four hours of group and one individual session a week. Outpatient sessions take place in the morning or evening.

The staff at Lifetime is made up of LCDCs at a client-to-staff ratio of 10-to-one.

Extras

Lifetime offers a family program that includes weekly counseling sessions at both the residential and outpatient levels. All programs at Lifetime are designed to help clients acquire tools for long-term sobriety and skills useful in daily living, such as job appropriate behavior. All clients are urged to join and attend local 12-step meeting groups and get sponsors to help them work the program. They also encouraged to gather a support system, form healthy relationships and be of service to the community.

In Summary

Lifetime is a great option for those in need of treatment but without the financial means. Whether a man seeking residential care or a family looking for outpatient treatment, all Lifetime clients acquire solid tools for maintained sobriety within a network of support in a safe and structured environment.
