Located in San Pedro, home of the Port of Los Angeles, House of Hope is a women-only, residential treatment center for substance abuse. The program provides a safe and structured environment and treatment based on the 12 steps, with group therapy and peer support also big components of the recovery process. By the end of the treatment, the women leave with important life skills, long-term support and a new sense of direction.

Accommodations and Food

House of Hope has 24 beds, split between a two-story home and five cottages. The main home has a comfortable, sorority house type of feel, with two large bedrooms upstairs that are similar to dorm spaces; one bedroom holds five people while the other holds three. Each room has small twin beds and small wooden dressers for each woman. The downstairs area features a kitchen, dining room and living room with a television. The cottages are split between two clients at a time, allowing for more privacy (they typically go to clients with seniority). When it comes time for therapy, clients walk over to a building next door to the main house that has therapy rooms, offices and a recreation room. Smoking is permitted on the premises during break time.

Meals are a group effort in this program. The staff stocks the kitchen each week, assigning cooking duties to different residents. The women get to choose the recipes, preparing family-style meals for the group. Coffee and snacks are available at certain times of the day.

Treatment and Staff

This program offers long-term help, with a typical treatment time of three to four months. There is no detox. Treatment focuses heavily on the 12 steps and a recovery-based community. Daily AA/NA meetings are a part of the schedule, while there are further discussions about the steps during group lectures.

Clients are able to meet with a primary therapist at least once a week, in addition to having several hours of group therapy each day. Group topics include relapse prevention, processing, the Big Book, grief and loss, anger management, parenting skills and spirituality. Weekly lectures educate clients about the disease concept of addiction.

The program also offers a sober living arrangement for women who complete residential treatment. This program requires clients to work or attend school during the day, while participating in group therapy and AA/NA meetings in the evenings. It costs $375 per month.

The staff includes two psychotherapists and drug and alcohol counselors.

Extras

The rec room gives residents a chance to move their bodies. Guided yoga is offered twice a week, as well as a Zumba dance class. Women also have access to a handful of cardio machines that can be used during free time. For those who enjoy getting outside, a supervised walk to the harbor happens each morning.

The family program on Tuesdays offers a night of group therapy, informing families about the disease of addiction and how to deal with addiction in their lives. Movie night is on Saturdays and there are weekly classes in yoga and knitting.

In Summary

House of Hope nurtures women back to health and happiness through daily AA/NA meetings, supportive therapy and education. By gaining a sense of stability and self-esteem, long-term sobriety becomes an achievable goal.
