Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Review

Located abut 30 miles north of Los Angeles in Valencia, California, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is a 238-bed nonprofit acute care hospital that includes a life-saving level II trauma center. The facility provides a wide range of services including a maternity ward, a renowned cancer program, stroke center, an acute rehab unit as well as a behavioral health unit (BHU). Being a psychiatric care facility, admission can be on a voluntary or involuntary basis.

Treatment and Staff

The BHU specializes in the care of male and female clients in psychological crisis. The facility provides a welcoming and safe environment that includes access to the hospital’s nursing departments and the emergency room. Despite being a large institution, the treatment approach is to treat the individual not the symptoms. To this end, intake assessments are utilized to create an individualized treatment plan designed to address the specific needs of the client.

The facility treats clients with a range of mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, trauma and major depression. The treatment approach includes an array of services including diagnosis and assessment, health screenings, medication recommendations and management and case management. In addition, community integration planning and referrals to outside health care providers are offered. Since the Henry Mayo BHU offers primarily intensive psychiatric services, 12-step recovery is not a component in the programming.

The Henry Mayo hospital team employs over 1,800 staff, including physicians with more than 70 specialties. The behavioral health unit employs psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, LMFTs, licensed psychiatric technicians, LCSWs, activity therapists and mental health workers. Individuals with co-occurring disorders receive medication management.

Extras

Joint Commission-Accredited, Henry Mayo hospital has received numerous prestigious recognitions including Community Cancer Program accreditation, STEMI Heart Attack Receiving Center and the Silver Medal of Honor awarded by the US Department of Health and Human Services in recognition of Organ Donation Rates.

As Henry Mayo is a nonprofit hospital dedicated to the service of the community, a needs assessment is performed every three years to evaluate new plans to benefit the health of the community.

In Summary

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is a nonprofit hospital renowned for its cancer and trauma programming. The behavior health unit is an LPS unit, meaning that client admission is not always voluntary. The BHU team is very experienced and specifically trained in crisis intervention and emergency procedures. The comprehensive approach includes assessment, screenings, medication management and case management. For clients seeking psychiatric treatment for themselves or a loved one, Henry Mayo’s BHU is a great option.
