Hanley Center Review
The Hanley Center is an 86-bed facility situated on 16 acres in West Palm Beach, Florida. Though it used to be owned by Hazelden, it’s now a part of the Origins Behavioral Healthcare network. The facility’s grounds have doubled in size over the past decade, with further renovations currently underway.
Accommodations and Food
Hanley is plush for a facility of its size, with leather couches, hardwood floors and picture windows. Outside there are palm trees, green lawns and gazebos surrounding a Serenity Fountain—and groups sometimes take place al fresco on the sunny patios. Clients also have the option of choosing a double beds over the standard twin that is offered.
The client demographic tends to skew older because if their emphasis on age-appropriate care. Hanley Center offers separate treatment program tracks for adults 18 to 48, 48 to 64 and those over 65. This allows counselors to incorporate factors like generational culture and age-related challenges into treatment plans. Younger clients are divided between male and female residences, while older clients have co-ed arrangements.
Meals are prepared daily by the on-staff chef and served buffet style in the dining hall. Snacks and coffee are available 24/7.
Treatment and Staff
Clients requiring detox spend 24 to 72 hours in a special ward. Chronic pain—common among older residents—is treated with acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and pool exercise. Residents with a dual diagnosis, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and eating disorders, are treated concurrently with their addiction. Individual therapy utilizes CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR, while groups target psychoeducation and relapse prevention. Age-specific issues are also addressed, like grief, loss and divorce.
The 12-step philosophy is the basis of treatment at Hanley Center and meetings are integrated into each client’s daily schedule. The staff that includes spiritual counselors, Master’s-level therapists, a registered nurse and a doctor who specializes in addiction.
Extras
All scheduled leisure activities happen the guidance of a certified therapeutic recreation specialist. The 17,000 foot Athletics and Wellness Center includes separate studios for yoga and art therapy, and will overlook the pool through floor-to-ceiling windows. Residents can also use the gym that comes with a full-time personal trainer, as well as the outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. When not in experiential therapy, basic exercise classes or off-site trips, clients can practice team-building on the ropes course or browse the Serenity Bookstore.
Hanley Center also offers outpatient treatment, a special programs for teens and a five-day Family Program that has received high praise from alums.
After initial treatment is complete, clients are often urged to stay an additional two weeks, during which they receive personalized aftercare programs and are connected with an AA or NA member or another Hanley alumni in the community.
In Summary
Hanley Center’s commitment to well-rounded treatment, spiritual wellness and their ability to cater to different age groups makes them very unique and attractive for clients in an older demographic. And the tropical weather of West Palm Beach is definitely a perk as well.
