Catholic Health: STAR-Amherst

Catholic Health: STAR-Amherst Review

Created in 1998, Catholic Health is a network of inpatient facilities, imaging centers and outpatient facilities serving Buffalo, New York and the surrounding areas. Its Substance Treatment and Recovery clinic, known as STAR-Amherst, is located in Williamsville, a small town 10 miles north-east of Buffalo. STAR-Amherst provides outpatient substance abuse treatment at the standard and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. Clients in need of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction can receive referrals to an affiliated Suboxone clinic or Pathways, two methadone clinics in the Catholic Health system.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients receive a customized treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy. Most clients attend group therapy once or twice a week, though those in need of more support can attend up to four groups a week. Both daytime and evening groups are available Monday through Thursday. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed, usually once a week. The duration of treatment is progress-based, with most clients completing their treatment plans in three to six months.

Groups incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. A DBT group is available, as well. While attendance of 12-step or other peer support meetings such as SMART Recovery are not required, they are strongly recommended. Dual diagnosis support and medication-management for mental health diagnoses are not provided on-site, but STAR-Amherst is able to screen clients for co-occurring disorders and refer them to mental health providers in the Catholic Health network.

The treatment team at STAR-Amherst includes LMHCs, CASACs and Masters of Education.

Extras

STAR-Amherst offers a family group for addiction education and emotional support on the first Wednesday of every month. For aftercare, the treatment team helps clients create an individual therapy schedule for on-going support and treatment.

In Summary

Catholic Health in Buffalo, New York created the STAR-Amherst clinic to provide responsive outpatient treatment for substance abuse. Its family group, mental health screenings and referrals ensure that clients have the opportunity to include their support system in recovery and to address the mental health issues that may have made them vulnerable to addiction.
