University of Rochester Medical Center: Strong Recovery

The Basics

The Strong Recovery program at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, offers outpatient treatment to adults, 18 years and older. It facilitates a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that treats substance abuse and co-occurring disorders with an emphasis on opioid addictions. Programming implements group and individual therapy, medication management, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and aftercare planning services.

Treatment and Staff

The most intensive treatment offered is the PHP, which is typically for clients who are struggling with a dual diagnosis or those who have recently left an inpatient program. Treatment is five days a week for about six hours a day; consisting of up to five group sessions. Clients also attend one or two individual sessions a week. The PHP is short-term, usually around two weeks, with the client then stepping down to outpatient treatment.

The IOP is up to three group meetings and one individual session a week. Groups are kept small in number, usually around eight clients to one therapist, as to offer an individualized experience.

During the PHP phase, clients are assessed to see if there is a need for stabilization or medication management. Groups focuses on relapse prevention, coping skills, identifying triggers and making healthy choices. Therapeutic approaches include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and DBT. For those in the opioid treatment program, clients receive a daily maintenance dose of methadone and buprenorphine, or Vivitrol injections monthly. This program also provides weekly group therapy and monthly individual sessions as well. Twelve-step programming is not a part of the treatment at Strong Recovery.

Strong Recovery has a multidisciplinary team of addiction specialists that include psychiatrists, physicians, RNs, CASACs, LPCs, LCSWs and MFTs.

Extras

Strong Recovery’s aftercare program includes weekly group meetings. Family counseling sessions are offered on an individualized basis. There are also Spanish language programs, a program for the deaf and specialized treatment for women who are coming out of jail and need supportive treatment.
