South Texas Behavioral Health Center

The Basics

Located in Edinburg, Texas, South Texas Behavioral Health Center provides a medical detox and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for clients with co-occurring disorders. Because of it’s focus on mental health, it does not utilize a 12-step based approach to treatment but its evidence-based modalities, which include CBT and DBT, are designed to provide comprehensive dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Clients in need of detox can complete this phase on-site. For clients addicted to opiates, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is provided via Suboxone and methadone. Clients are supervised around the clock. Length of detox depends on the individual, their drug of choice and severity of addiction.

Prior to admission to the IOP, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment with a medical doctor and they must pass the drug screening as well as exhibit a dual diagnosis to be accepted into the program. Additionally, clients must show willingness to recovery and a serious desire to work through their issues. They then receive individualized treatment plans that include a monthly session with a psychiatrist, three weekly group sessions and individual therapy, based the client’s needs. Group topics explore substance abuse, anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, grief, life skills, coping mechanisms and relapse prevention. Clients also learn extensively about the relationship between substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Groups are small, ranging between two and eight clients per session. The length of the IOP is six months.

Clients see a psychiatrist on a monthly basis. Initially, anti-depressants and mood stabilizers are prescribed and follow up appointments are scheduled to monitor progress.

The staff consists of two doctors and a team of nurses in the detox facility. The IOP staff includes a nursing assistant, psychiatrist, licensed therapist, two interns and administrative support.

Extras

The detox facility holds between 40 and 80 beds, which are broken into five gender-specific separate wings, corresponding with different age groups including children, adolescents, adults and senior citizens, who are most often struggling with an addiction to opiate painkillers. Residents are allowed to bring two sets of clothing, pajamas and basic toiletries.

South Texas Behavioral Health Center is a DAISY award partner, having received the honorary DAISY award, which honors staff nurses.

In Summary

South Texas Behavioral Health Center’s detox and IOP are highly comprehensive for clients with co-occurring disorders. With a specialized focus on mental health, those who found themselves self-medicating their primary issue will be well-served here as opposed to a traditional addiction treatment facility. Individualized care and a well-rounded staff make this network a viable option for those in the area who qualify.
