South Coast Counseling Review

Founded in 1954 in the sunny beach town of Costa Mesa, California, South Coast Counseling provides a comprehensive and holistic approach to treating clients struggling with substance abuse and addiction. It believes addiction must be targeted from all directions, which includes treating co-occurring disorders. By implementing alternative treatment options, South Coast Counseling believes clients have a better chance of sustaining life-long abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Aside from its outpatient options, South Coast Counseling offers a co-ed residential treatment program in a family-style, nurturing atmosphere.

Accommodations and Food

The residential program accommodates 16 clients who are lodged in beautifully furnished, gender-specific double-occupancy rooms, with some single rooms available as well. A typical private room includes a comfortable twin bed topped with a decorative comforter, two ornate lamps, a dresser and nightstand. The room’s white walls and matching ceiling along with windows covered with white panels lends a sense of clarity.

Residents are allowed to bring laptops and cell phones and asked to also bring flip flops/sandals, swimming wear and a beach towel. Wi-Fi and Cable TV are provided are are laundry facilities. Residents are transported to a local gym on a daily basis.

Clients are provided three healthy meals a day but dinner is a family-style affair. Food is served inside a large white-walled dining room that features a rectangular table, folding chairs and a coffee section with restaurant-style coffee pots with fresh brewed coffee.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admittance, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment and a variety of psychological tests, which include trauma. Based on the results, they receive individualized treatment plans. While detox is not provided on the premises, referrals can be made.

A plethora of evidence-based modalities are used; including DBT, CBT, trauma-informed care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Adlerian Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) and biofeedback. An assortment of experiential therapies, such as art therapy, cinema therapy, movement therapy, music therapy and psychodrama are also implemented.

Treatment includes group and individual therapy, psycho-education and attendance at 12-step meetings. Group topics include nutrition, wellness, trauma, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, meditation, addiction education, legal issues, interpersonal relationships, processing and psycho farm education, which focuses on educating residents on psychopharmacology. Medication management is provided for dual diagnosis clients.

The staff includes an intervention specialist/CADC-II, a licensed clinical psychologist, a Doctorate-level cardiac anesthesiologist/program director, a medical director, Master’s-level therapists, nurses, substance addiction counselors and an attorney. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-three.

Some group sessions are conducted at the beach. Aftercare is individualized but usually clients attend group and individual therapy on an outpatient basis.

The staff is highly credentialed and the intimacy of the facility helps clients receive comprehensive treatment in a supportive, family-like atmosphere. Additionally, the diversity of services including holistic approaches and evidence-based care all come at a price tag much lower than one would normally find at facilities with similar offerings.
