Memorial Healthcare System: SHARE Program

The Basics

The SHARE Program at Memorial Healthcare System was founded 1953 in Hollywood, Florida, just south of Fort Lauderdale. SHARE is a substance abuse program within the behavioral health department of Memorial Healthcare System, a large public healthcare network. SHARE offers outpatient treatment to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

Clients interested in the SHARE program must begin their intake by attending one of the program’s Monday through Thursday walk-in sessions. During this meeting, the counselor and client discuss the client’s substance abuse history and determine the needed level of care. If the client is deemed a good fit for SHARE, they meet with one of the program’s social workers to help build a treatment plan. Clients who are going through withdrawal or in need of more intensive care are referred to outside residential or detox facilities.

Each client’s treatment plan at SHARE is individualized and tailored to meet their specific needs. The treatment consists of a mixture of individual and group therapy, the intensity, length and frequency of which varies based on the individual. Each person can expect an average of two to four group meetings per week. Individual counseling is scheduled on an as-needed basis. Counselors aim to address each client’s unique needs in the meetings and use education, sharing, relapse prevention, DBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and trauma therapy. The group sessions are usually 10 to 15 clients led by one counselor.

Although the SHARE program is not 12-step oriented, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA groups while in the program.

The SHARE program is dual diagnosis and offers individual counseling with the organization’s mental health staff for clients with co-occurring disorders.

The staff at SHARE consists of licensed psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychotherapists, mental health counselors and certified peer specialists.

Extras

SHARE has a family program with group and individual therapy. The group meetings are held in the evenings on weekdays and consist of multiple families sharing and discussing substance abuse issues. The individual meetings consist of the counselor, client and their loved ones. The family therapy focuses on codependency issues and substance abuse education. The private family meetings are only offered if the client consents.

The SHARE program offers aftercare support for up to a year after leaving the program. This consists of group meetings on Wednesdays and Saturdays, individual meetings focused on relapse prevention and access to a peer support specialist.

In Summary

Memorial Healthcare System: SHARE Program offers comprehensive and individualized outpatient treatment for adults struggling with addiction and alcoholism. The variety of treatment techniques and small group sizes are a nice perk. Also, the robust mental health staff provides extensive support for clients with co-occurring disorders.
