Capistrano-Lincoln Street Retreat Review

Capistrano-Lincoln Street Retreat is a residential facility in Bakersfield, California for pregnant women and mothers with newborns. It has operated since 1999 as part of Bakersfield Recovery Services and provides 12-step oriented treatment for substance abuse and addiction.

Accommodations and Food

Capistrano-Lincoln Street Retreat is a single-story apartment complex with four three-bedroom units in a pleasant residential neighborhood. Bedrooms are either single or doubles with twin beds, space for a crib and a closet for personal items and storage. Pregnant women share a room, while mothers with newborns are accommodated in private rooms with their infants. Mothers also get an extra dresser for storing baby items. Each unit has one handicapped-accessible bathroom.

All individual units share a communal kitchen and a classroom space for facilitating groups and meetings. The fully-equipped kitchen includes a refrigerator, stove and microwave, ample storage space for food and all required cooking utensils. Connected to the kitchen is a dining room and breakfast bar with extra seating. All meals are prepared by the clients themselves and food ranges from comfort to healthy—expectant mothers are encouraged to follow a healthy diet to support their pregnancy.

The meeting space doubles as the media room and has a TV with DVD player. There is also a communal phone available for use between the hours of 4 pm and 10 pm. Family and friends are permitted visits on Sundays between 2 pm and 4 pm.

Treatment and Staff

Upon arrival, all clients are assessed by an intake coordinator to ensure that a residential track is their best option. Pregnant mothers undergo additional medical tests to ensure they are healthy and ready for treatment. There is no detox available through Capistrano-Lincoln, but clients can be referred to a recommended facility prior to primary care. Residential treatment lasts anywhere from 45 to 120 days depending on the client’s needs and finances.

All clients receive an individualized treatment plan based on their evaluation. Using a range of therapeutic approaches, the Capistrano-Lincoln program is based on a derivative of the Minnesota Model. Clients are primarily treated with group therapy but also receive individual therapy once per week, with more sessions in emergency situations. Residents must attend daily 12-step meetings and are required to find a sponsor in the AA/NA community and work the steps.

Clients also receive parenting training that focuses on caring for the baby, bottle feeding, breast feeding, cooking and cleaning. These groups are required and failure to attend puts clients at risk of eviction. All clients are randomly screened for drugs and alcohol to ensure the safety of other residents and their infants.

Capistrano-Lincoln helps clients with reintegration by offering job preparedness resources and assistance with medical issues. Additional groups include anger management, child care, relapse prevention and psychoeducation.

Counselors are CADACs who specialize in using evidence-based treatment approaches. CBT and DBT are an essential part of the recovery process.

Extras

Capistrano-Lincoln does not have an aftercare program but does offer referrals to local counseling agencies for additional support once inpatient treatment is completed. Additionally, a family program  is offered every Friday at 6 pm to bring family members together for therapy. Topics include enabling, supporting the mother during and after her pregnancy, communication skills and setting boundaries.

Bakersfield Recovery Services also operates Jason’s Retreat for Men, Capistrano Community for Women, an outpatient program and two sober livings.

In Summary

The Capistrano-Lincoln Street Retreat provides a safe environment for expectant and new mothers to start their recovery process.  Clients can expect to be engaged in a 12-step process with a focus on the first four steps. Mothers learn parenting skills and how to care for themselves and their baby while building a foundation for long-term sobriety. With state and private funding, clients receive affordable residential treatment to help rebuild their lives during this critical time of motherhood.
